Yes, of coarse. But finally, I often try to observe the very granular details with high n.A. objectives. And this works best by flatening the ciliated under the cover glas pressure..

Naussla ornata is a fascinating, large ciliate and I enjoyed watching your video very much. It provides a good impression of the insides, with the large vacuoles and the oral apparatus.

Re: Various Desmidiaceae collected in a moor
Thank you for the comments WWWW and Tim. The Hyalotheca that I find in my local pond here in North Carolina have many pores in the mucoid layer surrounding the cells on the filamentous desmid. Do you see these in your samples? H. mucosa should have pores at the apical cell wall, but I failed to spot...

Various Desmidiaceae collected in a moor
Dear foresters, during a short vacation I had the opportunity to visit a moor to take some water samples. Was quite happy to catch few desmidiaceae. Like to share some impressions with you. Hi Wes, maybe this test slide is quite interesting: 20220919_195311.JPG 20220919_194901.JPG 20220919_194949.JPG 20220919_195021.JPG The plate is called "K5" On the glas slide is a round, galvanized silver mirror with (engraved) parallel "zick-zack" lines. Such lines are also used on the Abbe's Test ...

Re: My Zeiss Microscopes
Hi Wes, May I ask you where you got the white grid on a dark background that you used for comparing objective performance? There was a box with Zeiss test slides included when I bought one of my used, old Zeiss Standard microscopes. So was very lucky to get these as free add-on, included in the pack...

Great thread about the pedal switch. Good to see what is your experience. There are some criteria that make a perfect pedal switch. I am using a pedal switch that is using a jack plug, conneting directly into the camera. They are nice, but I found that the force to activate the pedal switch was too ...

The "standard objective" is designed to compensate for the spherical aberration of a 0.17mm coverslip Therefore, the objective lenses used in inverted microscopes usually have a "correction ring" Often the inverted objectives are also called "long (working) distance ("LD") objectives & the objectiv...

Re: Cleaning/fixing/refurbishing objectives.
Well, finally you may try very unpolar solvents, like xylene or petrol ether.
However maybe the lense coating or the glas itself has kind of corrosion... so no solvent at all will help.
