Re: Scientific papers access

I have two options: 1. Drive to 80 km to the nearest university library and ask visitor password valid for the rest of the day. 2. Use Sci-hub You may now guess which one I use. I say this as a molecular biologist who frequently reads papers. However, not frequently publishing because my research is...

Re: Interesting bacteria structures or problem with over heat fixing?

Some stuff from your culture medium I think. It is my experience that samples taken directly from culture medium seldom give acceptable results. 1. From culture plates: pick a part of a colony and suspend into a drop of water on slide. 2. Liquid cultures: centrifuge a sample of the culture and disca...

Re: Who's Using Fluorescent Markers and Tags?

The methods mentioned above (antibodies, GFP) may be very expensive to use. It may also take months or even years to get a particular application to work even in a professional lab. There are also some organelle-specific dyes which are rather easy to use. They may be rather expensive too and I am no...

It is extremely simple. Just a bridge rectifier with a smoothening circuit. You may find almost an identical schematic e.g. here https://www.powerversity.com/what-is-a-bridge-rectifier-circuit-diagram-of-a-bridge-rectifier/ All the components are from my spare part boxes and the actual values of the...

If this is like Lomo transformers try to keep the smoke inside. They a powered by smoke and if the smoke escapes they do not function ay more :)

Re: Carl Zeiss Jenaval

I have no experience with Jena microscopes. However, in Russian Lomo microscopes (I have owned several of them) they sometimes used mains-type plugs with low voltage systems. These mains-plugs fitted into transformers, however could be accidentally inserted into mains as well. This might be fatally ...

A couple of pictures from my family album. My late father was a chemist in a rubber factory. In the first picture he is doing some microscope work in a lab 1934. The second picture was taken a few years later 1940 during the Finland-Russia Winter war after Soviet bombers attacked the factory. Most o...

Great idea!

I just stopped using immersion oil because I have to spare all the possible flammable solvents. Just in case I need them for making Molotov cocktails. I live just a few km from Russian border. We are ready in case you did your very last fatal mistake, mr Putin :x

I use heptane.

My Leitz Orthoplan manual suggests using xylene, which is not recommended nowadays for safety reasons. It is rather nasty-smelling anyway.

I have the same experience. I have old short barrel objectives in my Olympus FH and they work just fine. Extensive objective comparison and aiming at perfectionism with the image quality is fine if that's the part of the hobby. Otherwise the most important is that you get the information from the im...

Re: Frozen lower iris Berek condenser

I have submerged the whole iris system (without optics of course) into mineral spirit for some time. The grease dissolves and after that you just let the iris to dry. You may use a more volatile solvent e.g. hexane (or use hexane as a second solvent) to speed up the drying of the inner parts. Doing ...

Chromosomes are difficult to find without using special techniques. The best way to start is to use onion root cells. You may google plenty of procedures. According to my experience the most important thing is to use proper material. You grow roots and only use the very fresh tips. I think any gener...

There are several Orthoplans in US in Ebay at the moment. Plenty of objectives too. Extra turrets are not more easy to find in Europe I think. They show up in Ebay from time to time.
