Re: S-Kpl eyepieces

I had a look into the old brochures that can be found online: These eyepieces were recommended for the MC 63 or a 35mm SLR with 50mm lens for the Standard: S-KPL 10x/20 Br Specifically sold for use in the MC63 for best image quality . KPL-W 10x/20 Br KPL-W 12,5x/18 Br KPL-W 16x/16 Br The brochure I ...

Re: Microscope Community Outreach

We use a microscope with a camcorder and 1 meter flat screen tv for our group meetings. This gives a much quicker video transmission compared to a USB camera. For plancton this is important, for many other subjects not. Some better smartphones offer "MHD" technology to bring the smartphone image ont...

Hi Adnan, this is for sure a good idea! It is very valuable to introduce people into scientifical work. We might treat the environment better when we know more about it. Some thoughts: - With a bigger display (PC monitor) you can attract people that stand further away - To keep everything under cont...

Re: Digital Microscopy Monochrome Camera Demo

Hi John, the image quality your video shows is not up to todays standards. Micro photography has made a lot of progress since the first affordable digital cameras entered the market 20 years ago. One point to improve the quality of your images would be to learn a bit more about the proper use of a m...

Hi Petro,
only a few manufactureres made these specifically for just a few objectives in their system. Objectives are very different so such a cap has to be made for just one model of objective. It is possible to make one yourself, this has been done before. Do you have a lathe or a 3d printer?

there was a post in the german forum that compared these eyepieces for use in camera adaptation. The S-KLP was just slightly better.

Some badminton rackets have a main tube made of hardened high carbon steel. They give excellent hole punches when ground without heating above 200 °C.
For the wood block end grain is much better than transversal grain.

Onion root tip mitosis

Hi together, I think about a simple way to make permanent slides from onion tip cells. For fresh slides it is common to bathe the tips in warm karmin and acetic acid. Then knock and press under a cover slip. I read of a method that then continues with freezing the slide, snapping off the cover slip ...

Re: Fluorescence and filter cubes

Hi together, when comparing an LED with a mercury bulb one would have to take the efficiency and the spread of the output over the spectrum into account. I think a 3W LED of just the right wavelength can be quite strong compared to a mercury lamp where most of the output is held back by the exciting...

This looks very well made. The big manufacturers wouldn't have shipped it without their name on it. So it has to be a competent company from a smaller, less prominent manufacturer. Here in Germany there were loads of them, but to box doesn't look as if it came from Germany. It might have been made i...

Interesting. It is nearly the same document, but issued in english from the US representation and it includes the sliding prism trino. Maybe this was also a question of the market in focus. When a high power lamp was available the sliding prisma was probably not that necessary.

Re: Fluorescence and filter cubes

I'd just like to reiterate that UV from a LED (or any other) source is not necessarily safer than a mercury or xenon lamp. Hi Pete, this is true of cause. The source of the light doesn't matter, it is wave lenght and intensity that makes the damage. I plan to stay away from UV LEDs too. In the post...

more likely, in the side-arm of the adapter Hi Doron, I think you solved the riddle: There has to be a means to make observation eyepiece and camera parfocal and to repeat the setting a graduation would be useful. Your GFL brochure is quite interesting: This trino head without movable prism is unco...

Re: Leitz ortholux nosepiece and stage repair

Hi Gerard, for reassembly of the nosepiece the balls can be stuck into a layer of grease so they don't move. I would first check the nosepiece for mechanical damage. It won't work if there is just a little dent in the wrong place. The dampening of the stage movement always comes from the lubricants ...

Hi Jeff, that is the upper part of the Zeiss Lucigen illuminator fpr the Zeiss Standard RA. It was actually a parfocal length of 37mm. Therer were adapters called "PLEZY" that added 8mm lenth and had a weak lens to correct for the changed tube lenght.
Perhaps this is more for the collector today.

when setting this up in stopped down mode you get the theoretically right setting. How important this is in practical use? It is probably easier to set it up according to the theory than to determine how much of a problem it is to set it up differently. :D Especially since you have the pancake!

Re: Which is better for afocal - Pentax SMC 40mm pancake or Canon EF 40mm pancake ?

Hi Doron, you have to carry out the test with closed aperture and I would recommend to use a taken picture as the live view image may be "optimized" in a way. When you set f8 on the EF lens it will close down in the moment of exposure and the test can be carried out as good as with an old manual len...

Re: Which is better for afocal - Pentax SMC 40mm pancake or Canon EF 40mm pancake ?

Hi Doron, as far as I understand it the reason for a pancake lens is this: The eyepiece has a certain point where the image is formed. The camera objective has a certein point where this image has to be projected ideally (somewhere in the middle). These points can be brought in one place much easier...

Re: Stereo Triocular or Binocular

Hi Dave, a stereo microscope is very useful to have, no question. For photography most stereo microscopes are just so-so. The numerical aperture is barely high enough for observation use. Reson for this is that a stereo microscope offers a big free working distance ans this would make huge optics ne...
