Epi-illuminator for Zeiss Standard
Is anyone looking for the very rare Zeiss Standard epi-illuminator? (Just the illuminator, not the microscope). Fits on the Standards with the removable turrets. I need to clear out my spare parts shelf; I have two of these and only need one. $50 plus postage. I know I paid much more than this! I ju...

They can also be made into a nice coffee table with just a bit of modification Yes, really!!! I once heard a tale of a Leitz salesman who took a Zeiss Axiomat in on trade for a new Leitz microscope. Then he actually set up the Axiomat as a coffee table in his office. Sounds like just an urban legen...

Re: "Fibres" common topic? Did you make interesting observations or photos?
Thanks for the links. I've had that slide for years, but never really thought about what Japanese Tissue was. I assumed it was just rice paper. Now I know it's something quite distinct, with applications in art and book conservation. The British Museum video was great. It was about art, but there we...

Re: "Fibres" common topic? Did you make interesting observations or photos?
Here's a tiny little slide called "Japanese Tissue". I don't remember where I got it. I think it was in a box of microfossils I purchased at the fundraiser for the Paleontological Society. Anyway, here's the photo of the fibers. I'm not sure what type of fibre they are, but I'm guessing rice fibre o...

There it is! and it even has an LED ring light!
I knew someone here would have the answer.

Re: Inverted Stereomicroscope
What would be the specific advantages of an inverted stereo? OK, what if you want to examine the ventral surface of a small aquatic invertebrate, perhaps a small insect? You could flip it over, but it would flip right back. You could kill it and then flip it over. But what if you want to observe so...

Inverted Stereomicroscope
Just wondering... Are there inverted stereomicroscopes? I can't remember seeing one, and a google search didn't come up with anything. I've seen horizontal stereomicroscopes, but not inverted. A lot of things I'm interested in are visible in the 10x range. I suppose a regular inverted scope with a l...

The two sliders on the front: The top one is the lambda plate, for polarized light. The lower is the analyzer for Polarized light and DIC (It's labeled DIK; I think that's German!). There are a lot of sliders and controls. The engineers wanted full control of the optical path when they designed this...

Zeiss Axiomat
If you've ever wanted to own an inverted Zeiss Axiomat, now is the time. I've gone through it and everything seems to work. Includes the polarizer and analyzer sliders as well as the two iris sliders. The photo port is build into the side. One binocular with two 10x oculars. You can later add a seco...

Re: Zeiss Experts: What Model is This?
The Standard WL come up on eBay often enough. There was a nice one just a few weeks back. Here's a few photos of my Standard WLs. Maybe just to show that they can be configured in a multitude of ways, from simple to complicated. The black is probably as good as the gray. Either is fine.

Re: Zeiss Experts: What Model is This?
The Standard WL is a great research grade microscope. It has parts interchangeable with the other Standards, as well as the Universals.

Re: Zeiss Experts: What Model is This?
That's a Zeiss KF2. It's a variation of the Standard series, similar to the junior model. They have an internal illuminator. The supplied binocular has mirrors instead of prisms, so it's lighter and cheaper. Many parts are interchangeable with the bigger Standards, the obvious exception being no opt...

Zeiss Universal UEM Industrial
Here's a stand for a Zeiss Universal UEM. You can take all the parts off of your Universal and move them over to this heavy-duty stand. Many advantages, for example, you can raise and lower both the upper head and lower stage. Gives you a lot more range. I need to make more room for recent microscop...

At work we use plastic slides for thin sections, and we first grind them flat and polish to 800 grit. Then use use a refractive index matched adhesive that seems to fill in the polishing marks. It's all part of a system called Technovit by EXAKT. Here's a link to a video showing the adhesive and how...

Zeiss DIC- could this work?
I admit I don't know anything about DIC to begin with... I have some epi-DIC prisms and objectives, like the one imaged here. If I put an INKO condenser, such as the one pictured, will it DIC? (I don't yet have a condenser, but might consider buying one) I know it can't be so simple, but I'm sure so...

Re: Discovery of Microorganisms
Here's a link to some helpful bacterial information from the UK microscopy site. http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artjan04/wdbacteria.html The methods useful for amateurs are liquid mixed cultures. Selective media and solid media like we use in the microbiology laboratory are more problematic for...

Re: Discovery of Microorganisms
Ok, I'm not a microbiologist, but I have spent a few years working in a microbiology lab. So I'll jump in. Agree that there are so many unknown bacteria. You could go out, grab a bucket of dirt out of your backyard, and find new organisms. Most organisms are described by their biochemical actions, w...

Oh, OK. Those stage gears can be a problem. Still I think not insurmountable. I have a cheap pin wrench; I think I paid 25 dollars for it. The real microscope repairman who comes by my lab has a nice one from ThorLabs. I'm sure it's much more expensive. You can post photos of the problem, and maybe ...

Re: Frustration!
I use a Zeiss Universal. The focusing mechanism is modular. It's a block that can be removed by taking out 6 screws. Then you can put a new one on. It is the same focusing rack as the Zeiss Standard WL, so it's possible to find a good one for under $100. I have changed out many over the years. I thi...

Re: Stereomicroscope stand

Then digitally merge the images taken with different filter combinations. I know people once used film for fluorescence microscopy back in the day...

Re: Stereomicroscope stand
This is the first roll of film in the analog camera. Trying for some fine grain monochromatic photos. I'm using the original Zeiss controller. Once I get it working with the 35mm, I'll switch to the 4x5 inch format. I've already bought the large film, but holding off until I get the bugs worked out....
