Re: Olympus E top illumination problem

Hello Robo-I’ve got the same model-the marks look like smudges-my only suggestion is to try zeiss cleaning wipes-I’ve had a few objectives that I couldn’t get smudge marks of front element until I tried these wipes-picture below-in Australia you can get them in supermarkets.Worth a try as they are p...

Zeiss phase turret mount size

Hello peeps-below is a picture of a type of zeiss condenser for variable phase objectives-its looks like it mounts via the top via clamp ring judging from the bottom pic-What size are zeiss ring clamp condensers? 37mm or 39mm or something else?

Re: New to me: early 1950s Leitz BS 48/92k with Heine

Very cool viktor j Nilsson! The heine looks in very nice condition. Funnily enough I got a second heine just the other day on eBay from Romania-yet to arrive-for my travel scope-it’s got the filter holder and filters-I wonder if it performs best with the frosted filter close to the light entry-do yo...

Greg Howald nice lab! I like how everywhere you turn there’s a different scope to enjoy.. I wish I was neat like that-one day maybe…oh I see you’ve got Mozart’s Gran Partita in your CD collection-and the superb Czechoslovak orchestral version-my favourite. Only kidding! Stuck Leitz Berek top

Hello peeps-I’ve got a Leitz Berek with .90 top but want to hunt down a 1.4 top-but before I do that I have to work out how to remove the other top-it’s very stuck-I put a bit of isopropyl to see if it would move-no avail but then thought I should get some advice-I got it at a very good price and do...

Re: I Have A Weight Problem

Hi JeffB -If your not adverse to vintage options from the big four the Leitz SM medical scope is a nice small light scope designed for doctors to carry around in the 50’s 60’s-aluminium stage-the ones with the clever one knob fine/coarse focus are better IMO as they seem very trouble free compared t...

Re: Are there low-power oil immersion objectives?

I can confirm that MichealG-I have that cap for the 10x Pv-it seems to only fit in the Pv 10 with the rounder front profile-I’ve got a couple of water dipping WE Pv objectives and the 10x can be used as a water dipper with that immersion cap-it’s a recommended “set” in the heine manual if wanting to...

No one would have believed in the last years of the 21st century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narr...

Sorry I don’t have video to show-was just doing a quick check on my compost tea brew and I witnessed something bizarre -imagine two ciliates-one orange 🍊 sized and the other cigarette sized-the smaller one latches on the the larger one and it’s mouth just gets bigger and bigger then suddenly most of...

Thanks for all the info guys-the polarising filter may be a good idea if a sample is a bit too shiny (non metallic)-so PeteM you are confirming that later model SM auxiliary lenses can be used as long as they are 48mm thread and you’ve got enough room for working distance? Nice images—Greg Howald-does XPL mean crossed polariser? Makes the fly mouth part look like darkfield. Oblique is so diverse and I suspect we haven’t seen the last of unique twists to it-I’m fanging to try VAC-need to buy some polarising sheets…

Hi linuxusr -I’ve used the technique where you lower objective till it just touches the oil drop on the coverslip then rotate the nose back and forth just slightly to “bump” out air bubbles. I’ve also heard of people using a fine brush to apply oil to front of objective as well as place a drop in no...

There was a few contraptions on the market that did offer this-mainly in 60’s early 70’s-Nikon IPC unit-the almost extinct color Heine-AO polaret and I think another company I can’t think of-I bemoan the lack of this in modern scopes all the time…nice images on the first link

Re: Do you think those are diatoms?

I would say most definitely-pretty common types-the real give away are the oblong shaped ones-at higher mag they have equally spaced markings on both longways edges that make them look a bit like a rulers-but they also come in very interesting shapes and size and move about slowly.
