Re: Best Polarizing Filters
Most photographic filters are circular polarizers. They did make some linear polarizers, too, but they are rare. Linear is typical for this application. If you use circular, I believe the “front” of the filter needs to face the specimen for best results.

Re: AO Spencer Series 4: Am I Missing a Mirror?
The color is most likely Methylene Blue that somebody spilled. My AO 10 has a very similar ring, but purple; probably Crystal Violet. Any mirror will work, but I suspect the original was a very thin 1st surface mirror for the highest efficiency. (They have silver on the surface so the light doesn’t ...

New perspective on our koi pond
I'm still very new to this, so please feel free to offer suggestions. Stack of about 20 frames. AO 10 using 20x 1022 and 214F DF condenser.

Re: List of Reichert/Leica 45mm Objectives?
Apochronaut certainly knows more than anyone here about these objectives. I wasn't able to find a single post where they were all listed, though. I put together this table from all the sources i could gather. Hopefully it will be helpful to others. If anybody has additions or corrections, please let...

List of Reichert/Leica 45mm Parfocal Infinity RMS Objectives?
I believe I’m spoiled by P.S.Neeley’s encyclopedic collection of AO information. Is there any resource where one could find a reasonably complete list of the more modern 45mm parfocal Infinity RMS objectives sold as Reichert, Leica or otherwise for the Microstar IV, Diastar, ATC2000, etc?

Most 3D prints will not survive high temperatures, and definitely not parts made on the machines typically owned by hobbyists. (Makerbot and the like)

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
I have a question for something you can try. If you put the 437 into the side of the optical tube with the diopter, how does it work paired with a 176? Aside from not being parfocal with the 176 (it’s wound to its lowest, and I didn’t try to match focus) it looks fine viewed by eye. I am surprised ...

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
I didn’t note the particulars of the set up last night, so rather that guess, I reset the camera and shot a couple more. This time the spacer between the phototube and #437 was shorter, so the extremities have been cropped out. The distance from the trinoc shoulder the the top of the eyepiece is 155...

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
The first noticeable thing is that both are displaying a bit of asymmetry. There is a falloff of corrections in the lower left corner of each image but in the second image it is worse. Something is out of alignment. How were these taken? It seems that you are capturing almost the entire image circl...

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
This is a very quick test of 2 different setups. One uses the #437 as a relay lens, and the other uses a 2X teleconverter. Aside from slightly different framing, can you see significant qualitative differences? Is one better? The “subject” is a laser print. I wanted something that would be reasonabl...

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
The interior is quite spacious. I may flock it, regardless, once I have some flocking material on hand. After experimenting with the set-up, I might not end up using this tube. With the 10x 437 eyepiece, the area of coverage is too small for my liking, even on a full frame sensor. Even a 5x eyepiece...

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Spli
Yes. If one of those older condensers is just marked 1.25, then it is a two lens abbe. The 1087 is also a two lens but the bottom lens is noticeably aspheric. I suspect that the front lens is the same on each, since the 1.25 N.A. specification is established by it's angle, so theoretically an inter...

Thanks. I will look into the Falcon tubes. I was going to start the acid processing and need to do it outside, since I don't have a fume hood, but the weather will not cooperate. Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
I now have a 1043 trinoc head and there is a Nikon T-mount adapter on its way. The phototube is the last piece I need. Today I realized that my condenser is a simple Abbe. It’s only marking is “N.A. 1.25” so I believe it’s a 1088, but I’m not certain. For reasons I can’t explain, I happen to have a ...

LCD's need polarizing filters to work. You can't simply remove them and expect it to behave the same way. Here is an example:

I spotted this on fleabay and it piqued my curiosity. All the components seam to be high quality, though I’m not experienced enough to guess about condition. The Zeiss objectives on a Nikon stand/head is the oddity. I understand that Nikon objectives should be fully corrected, hence the head should ...

Ok, now I'm curious. What would the procedure be without a phase telescope? Eyeball it and call it good because that means you probably aren't doing phase anyway?

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
Well, I haven’t picked up a head yet, but I did snag a #437 to use as a projection eyepiece. It seems like that is the safest path for high quality images. On a loosely related note, I was wondering about tube lens compatibility. If a 410 Trinocular head popped up, how far off is the correction when...

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
I searched eBay for American optical trinocular and the first. hit was a 1043 head for 60 or best offer and then a 110 scope for a 100 I saw those, but the condition based on their pictures didn't give me a lot of confidence. There are others, too, for not too much more. I'm still weighing options....

Just curious, but would a 110/120 Trino head be an upgrade on my series 10? With the right eyepieces it would give a wider field of view, right?

Re: AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
You can use one of those but they intercept the beam in advance of the telan lens, which has quite a degree of input into the correction of the final image. In that case, I should probably hold out for a proper triocular head. There isn't much point in going to the trouble of a splitter to then mou...

AO Triocular vs Beam Splitter
I’m enjoying my new-to-me AO 10, and starting to get more interested in using it for photography. It came with the binocular head. My original plan was to use my iPhone or Nikon J4 (1” Sensor) through the eyeport. I made an adapter for the J4 and have played with it briefly. Because it’s not a paraf...
