Alga

25x and 40x, 40µm, Brightfield, Oblique and Phase, single images in Photoshop. The unusual oblique effect is achieved by placing a Phase III ring under a Phase II objective. Believe that is a version of COL (Circular Oblique Lighting) http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag171/mapologo/A23w_zpsjvsnhu...

Nice images.
My favorite is #2 because of the wonderful repeating pattern.
Makes me wonder if they are fractal.

Thanks gekko.
No idea who or what. It caught me by surprise.
Evil ? Perhaps it is just as Darwin said, only the "horribly cruel work of nature!"
Not sure I want to clean that slide!
Phase, 25x and 40x * 1.6 which would make it 40x and 64x

Now that I have seen it again, I think this is more of an unusual situation rather than an unusual beastie!

Did you get from a lake?
Collected from the surface of a friend's garden pond, with a couple of weeds thrown in.
Forgot about it for a few weeks, there is now some detritus on the bottom which has become Ostracod territory!

Thanks Rodney. Indeed, I also found the Polarized illumination quite revealing. Hi gekko, many thanks. I should have anticipated the possibility of Ostacods even though it was a new sample jar, since I got the sample from the bottom. They always seems to catch me off base. I tend to use a larger dro...

Re: Kohler illumination

I agree with Charles. Both illuminators provide Köhler, as long as you can get the bulbs you are good to go with either one. I would guess that the ortho illuminator once set up will require less fiddling about. While the spencer 735 will probably be a little more fiddly, it is black and has a cool ...

According to the specs, the illumination is 6v/25w. Should be alright even if it is plastic.
