Re: Reichert Zetopan - converted to infinity optics.
I will take a rare stand and partially disagree with apochromat. all things being equal, infinity systems significantly simplify the design of objectives and make them more adaptable, as well as allow introduction of mid-path components without using corrective lenses. This was the reason for moving...

Re: More microtome porn: Leitz 1300 base sledge microtome
Tissue processors can be bought very cheaply, but the only way it makes sense to have one is if you do allot of processing. Otherwise it is just a waste of stains, reagents and solvents. Basically is is a device which automatically moves your tissue sample between reagent cycles and maintains proppe...

Re: Decent microscope for less than 100 €/$/£? Possible?
The funny thing is, when buying monocular misroscope made by the "Big 4", AO or LOMO, it can be easily upgraded with bino or trino head down the road. Its the stand, objectives and condenser that make the scope, not the type of head. Good stable stand and good objectives go long way as far as invest...

Re: Russian "traveling" or "expedition" microscope
I'm very familiar with these scopes down to the model number designation. Thanks for commenting. Are you familiar with that zoom condenser in the MBI scopes? This is one (with variable NA of 0.16-1.4): http://www.ebay.ie/itm/271880845205 I wonder if it is an internal reflecting type (having interna...

Re: Russian "traveling" or "expedition" microscope
I'm very familiar with these scopes down to the model number designation. D13 and higher are binocular AU-12 head equipped. Good scopes, but they were never designd to be true field scopes. Espedition version in USSR meant you were going on a huge research vessel, or were transported to your destina...

Re: More microtome porn: Leitz 1300 base sledge microtome
Nice equipment! I have never had an opportunity to own sledge microtome. Leitz rotary I have seems to satisfy the very little need for sectioning I ever have. No tissue processor either. Plain old jars, but than again, I do very little histology. Art of slide preparation is a dying one, especially f...

Re: My scopes: Olympus CHA, SZH10, BHB and Vanox AHBT3
What is the transformer used for the BH-LSH on your BH DIC setup? Can you post a pic/model number etc? Well, it's actually a Vanox (Old model) AH-LSH Halogen kit. You can find the info here: http://www.alanwood.net/downloads/olympus-vanox-ah-lsh-instructions.pdf This is on the backside: 2016-11-04 ...

Very nice set of scopes! Vanox is a beutiful instrument. The only thing to be aware is that it is full of electronic components, servos and stepping motors (if it has all the options). If they go poopoo, it will not be a cheap repair.

This ia GFL stand with trinocular head. Whichever way you play it, it is worth 100 pounds with no objectives.
Spend another 150-200 pounds on 4 plan onjectives, and you will h=get yourseld a fine BF scope

Re: Blemishes when viewing slides.
Opening it up, at this point, is definitely a no no but finding out where the problem lies is a yes yes. The concern with all of these budget scopes is the multiple gaps in quality control necessary, to get dirty optics to a purchaser. This isn't a unique scenario. The replacement head could concei...

Re: Blemishes when viewing slides.
I agree with Charles. It sounds like the problem is in the binocular head. It aslso sounds like the blemishes are in thr focal plane. When you disassembled the head, did you see anything there? Also, you can remove the head look through it with eyepieces inserted. while pointing the head to the ligh...

Re: Micscapes Virtual Microscope by 75RR
I tend to buy from 2-3 reputable sellers on eBay, but sometimes risk "as is" if the price is right. For example if I see that In the worst case I can part the scope and sell it for at least what my cost is, I would buy it i=even if it says as is. The bottom line is that if I buy a cheap scope, I ass...

Re: Micscapes Virtual Microscope by 75RR
The 40X is for the inverted scope for use looking through a culture dish. The 0.63 DIC condenser is also for the inverted scope. I would have gone for the 1.4 NA phase condenser for $99. Me too. I would also try to go for phase-neufluar objectives. They are not much more expensive than plans. Also ...

Interesting. I was pretty sure that universal stands are brass with aluminum bases. Even stand with everything stripped weights more than it would if it was aluminum. The focusing mechanism common to the Standard WL and the Photomicroscope, Ultraphot and Universal stands is brass, I think. Certainl...

Re: Zeiss inverted
I think gray Zeiss is brass as well. I think you will find that the "gray" Standards are made of cast aluminum, with just the parts that connect made of brass. The exception is the grey WL which is solid aluminum with brass connections. The black WL is of course solid brass. The newer ones (infinit...

I think gray Zeiss is brass as well. The base is Zn/Al, but the rest is brass.
I do think the quality of enamel is higher in black line.

What you can get for under $100
Just finished cleaning (removing dry oil etc). New old stock GFL. It came with 1.4 APL Phase condenser, but with regular non-phase Plan objectives in wooden case, so I put 0.9 flip-top condenser instead.
It a nice little unit! Less than $100 shipped.

That's the beauty of having a 5 or more place nosepiece on a stand. You can put a lower magnification oil immersion into the rotation. Having a 60 or 63 high N.A. lens as Oktagon uses is great and really allows for great flexibility but there are even more pedestrian mid. mag. oil objectives out th...

Re: 100x Oil immersion in practice
I typically observe stationary objects. The last three objectives out of 7 on the turret are Oil, so I can go back from 100 to 63 and 40 without having any issues. If I need to scan with 16, 10 (or even 3.5), oil drop on the slide does not make much difference. The only objectives I found to have is...
