Life in dark water

A sample of water that is in a jug that I am using to root a plant cutting. The jug itself is opaque white and yet there is life. Taken at about 400x. Some small microbes in there.

Got a new scope!

Well, secondhand anyway...Spotted this Apex Practicioner in Cash Converters the other day and had to put a deposit on it. It needed some work (stage and condenser were wonky) but we got there, and for £60 it was a bit of a bargain. Not bad optics either, tho I have some spares now (including a 100x ...

I don't know the wattage of mine but it is insanely bright! The brightness control is off and just on. There's no real control, it's all or nothing!

Danged if I can find Cyclops' exact light amongst the zillions https://tinyurl.com/ph5gr4j in the universe of itty-bitty LED spotlights. They're mainly used for recessed lighting rather than microscopy, btw. This one http://www.dx.com/p/e27-helical-luxeon-k2-3w-150-lumen-led-light-bulb-100v-240v-ac...

Re: UV light for microscopy?

I am thinking of doing the same as well. You can put a right angle prism (or even a microscope slide at 45 degree) under you condenser (with hypotenuse face facing up towards condenser). Then shin UV torch to it and observe/focus via camera (or computer) screen. Algae may produce faint red light un...

UV light for microscopy?

I have a small UV LED torch (flashlight) and I was wondering what applications I could put it to in regards the microscope. It's visible so not a blacklight but fluorescent objects glow under it, as do white objects.

Re: Present for a kid

The trouble with starter scopes is they nearly always concentrate on high magnification, 'up to 1000x magnification ' in big letters, and without a good light set up they're useless. My first scope was a cheap nasty plastic affair with 600x highest power, but it was so dim with just the mirror it wa...

Does it have a brand name on it? There are a bunch of similar lamps on the web, but I haven't yet found that particular one yet. Where did the LED light come from? It looks like it produces a powerful beam.
I was sent it by someone on facebook, it is incredibly bright!
