Re: I found this microscope looking device that i'd like to identify! (And possibly repair?)
The only, and i mean ONLY writing i was able to find on the device was a big 622 cast under the bottom of the base. There seems to be reversed writing in the centre of the 3rd image next to the concentric circles. Reflection? I think that was lettering on the white board marker that was used as tes...

Re: Partnership in Nature
Very nice, thanks for posting this. IIRC, the ecological partnership where both species benefit is called mutualism (as opposed to commensalism, predation, parasitism etc.). We have these flat, sheet like types growing on the patio roof, but I've never thought of trying them under the 'scope. I can ...

Still, isn't it amazing how nothing in nature goes to waste. The finely tuned engine of the ecosystem rules.
Very nice stereo scope, by the way.

Re: I found this microscope looking device that i'd like to identify! (And possibly repair?)
That's an interesting looking thing. Are there no brand names or inscriptions to be found? Who sold it to you? Could be a clue as to what it is. In optics, "f" usually denotes focal length, so it prolly means that the lens assembly that you've unscrewed has a focal length of 100 mm. It's not a typic...

Very pleasing picture for sure.
Since the structure is clearly that of a psychedelic flower bush, can I assume that your retarder plate was once a Led Zeppelin CD case?

Re: Haematococcus cell (and a puzzling question added)
Mintaka, ... the green outer ring in the actual Haematococcus cell I showed above was not just a very thin band around the perifery Mmmm .... I remember that when I looked at one of these cysts once, it was a very opaque "wine-red black" in bright field (I couldn't make out any green going on, prol...

Re: Haematococcus cell (and a puzzling question added)
Nice images gekko . I can only speculate about the reason for the interesting differences between the bright and dark field images. Bright field works thanks to the absorption of light, while dark field relies on scattered light. If the cyst has predominantly red pigment in the center, and only a bi...

That slipper animalcule is nicely shown 3d-like. One gets a good idea of its shape, especially when it rocks itself slightly along its longitudinal axis. Very good stuff!

Thank you Naphthalene for your informative reply. I am pleased to note that the requirements are not at all exotic. This is definitely going on my microscopic to-do list. If I get results half as good as the pictures above, I'll consider it a success. Thanks again.

Very interesting, and the chromosomes are remarkably clear and easily recognizable as such. Did you prepare the slides yourself, and if so, is the process very involved? Are the cells still intact or are the chromosomes somehow free in the medium? Thanks in advance.

My son rescued this ladybug from the pool. It spent some time on his hand cleaning its soaked paws - just enough time for a few quick snapshots with a Celestron USB microscope. http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u446/Littledogstar/Image36_zpstruygfhi.jpg http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u446/Lit...

Re: Victorian Age vs. Today's Opportunities
One may ask if it is preferable in general to live in a later era rather than an earlier one. It is obviously desirable from a technological, scientific and medical point of view. But was the people living, say, 120 years ago better off in any way at all compared to us today? I sometimes wonder if w...
