Hello,
yes an interesting property of Euglyphides.
They produce these scales in their golgi-apparatus and store them inside for the coming cell generation:

Hello 75RR,
yes lobster trap was my first impression, too, which this photograph shows even more clearly (glycerine and slight polarised light):
Still, the riddle remains!

Hello, At first glance this 232 µm high specimen from bog water looks like a testate amoeba http://www.hans-rothauscher.de/testaceen/forum/unknown.jpg However, there are to my knowledge no testacea with a round circumference and a rather clear grainy surface with litte pimples around the fundus. The...

Thanks Essaouira,
I like the look-and-feel of Ubuntu. But as selection of software is so much limited and difficult to install I am happily back to Win10.

Re: Testate Amoeba - Difflugia pyriformis
Hello Chris, your specimen is about 120 µm high. Most pyriform difflugia are much bigger. One characteristic is the very regular bunch of "stones" around the aperture. Not typical for Zivkovicia/pontigulasia/, my first wild guess was probably wrong. As Ferry Siemensma wrote, "Identification [of Diff...

Hello Chris,
Scale bar 100 µm?
may be Zivkovicia spectabilis, look at 40-45 seconds for view into pseudostome.

Hi Mike,
no, that's detritus or other rubbish.
The Arcella (conica?) is either encysted or empty.

Re: testate amoebas ?
Hello Mintakax, As for side view, is there a procedure for obtaining this ? No procedure! One tries to turn the object by tipping on the cover glass or pushing the glass to a side. If you are lucky the object rotates a bit and lets you view it from another angle. Convex slides are helpful. Its 10% s...

Re: testate amoebas ?
Hello mintakax,
some guesses:
1. An Arcella, size and side view would have helped
2. Probably a Difflugia or a Pontigulasia
3. A filose Amoeba
4. No idea, probably no Amoeba
5. Probably another small Arcella
6. Probably another filose Amoeba or as 75RR guessed a Heliozoa.
Cheers,
Hans

Nice Foraminifer from Egypt
Hello, This pretty foraminifera came from Red Sea beach sand. 25x Neofluar transmitted and reflected light. About 300 µm wide. Stacked with Picolay from 38 frames: http://www.hans-rothauscher.de/testaceen/forum/foram_last.jpg You will probably also like this version of the photo, greyscale, negative...

Foraminifer from Honduras
Hello, The sand on Roatan-beach did not contain many forams. This is a stack of a 400 µm large specimen, taken with 25x Neofluar, transmitted and reflected (Sansjö-Lamp) light. The original fotos where quite dull and required quite some contrast and sharpness enhancement, negative, grayscaled. http:...

@MicroBob, Also interesting: The Universiy of Hamburg entertains a big algae collection. Some desmidacaes have been collected 50 years ago and are grown and cared for since then. I have a rather old water sample from spring with demids (M. rotata and Netrium) still healthy and multiplying, although ...

the first one is a Centropyxis most probably aculeata.
Second one ?? I wonder if phase contrast is the right method for this kind of object?
The last one??
