Hello @MicroBob,
Greetings,
Hans
Why don't you let your platform swim in a defined immersion depth?originally I thought to keep the platform above water level to keep it moist

Hans

Hello, interesting thread. I have a similar project and wonder if anybody here has any idea: Recenctly I have obtained a handful of bog sphagnum inhabiting several species of testate amoeba. Sphagnum are multi storey buildings with organisms in the bottom region requiring pure water, up to some in t...

Testate amoeba Heleopera petricola
Hello forum, Heleopera petricola is not uncommon in wet bog sphagnum. Unfortunately water samples from this source usually are quite untidy, with sphagnum leaves and other debris spoiling the view. So it is a challenge to view a tidy specimen. Here is a nice 135 µm high specimen: http://www.hans-rot...

Re: Amobeae tests (fresh water)
Hello 75RR, I believe your amoebae belong to the genus Zonomyxa. I had based my guess on the countless small (< 1 µm) violet granules filling the cytoplasm. There are two very similar Genera: Amphizonella found in dryer moss. Zonomyxa living in Sphagnum. (see also http://www1.nencki.gov.pl/pdf/ap/ap...

Hello Grahame,
cannot figure the size oft he creatures from the numbers in the pictures, 30 µm and 20 µm cannot be the diameters?
I believe these are Arcella of the hemisphaerica/rotundata/intermedia-Komplex, sizes between approx. 35 and 62 µm.

Hello @desertrat a scientific paper Thanks, I did not know this paper. Interesting that testate amoebae predated the Ediacarian. I have read somewhere that the filopodia (Eyglypha) are still considerably older than the arcellinida. Also interesting that Testate amoebae have been successfully used as...

Thanks for your comments. The collection and subsequent use of xenosomes, i.e. foreign materials for the reenforcement of testacea shells has frequently raised the question: May this already be called behaviour? Many members of the Hyalospheniidae build their shells using recycled shell plates scave...

Sorry Kurt for wrong spelling.
Even the word hyalinity, I fear, does not exist and is my own word creation.
When Arcella cells are young, their shells are are colorless and hyaline, i.e. translucent, older ones become brown and intransparent.
Sorry for confusion.

Re: Copepod, Amoeba and Algae
Hello Hakan, they are all great. I like the Arcella best. I believe its a young Arcella gibbosa, when they grow older they partly loose their hyalanity. The blob bottom left of the sarcode is a contractile vacuole. By osmotic pressure the organism constantly absorbs water. The vacuole pumps excessiv...

Hello,
Which cameras, DSLR or compact (micro four-third?), can be controlled via the laptop, i. e. tethered shooting? Until now I only found high end Olympus like the E-M1 and the E-M5 Mark II.
Thanks,
Hans

Hi Francisco,
Thanks, interesting! How the plasma moves to and fro between the two shells, until both have an equal share and composition of plasma and food particles.

Hello, this is the rare Arcella formosa ( about 200 µm wide). It has so far only been found in a few locations in Canada, Netherlands, Hungary, Germany (Mecklenburg) and this year by me in a nearby fen: http://www.hans-rothauscher.de/testaceen/forum/formosa8.jpg (dorsal) http://www.hans-rothauscher....

Hello Ronald, I only found them in one place, where 3 years ago they suddenly appeared in great numbers. There still are half a dozen in each petri-dish from recent water samples.
