Re: Help! I'm becoming "domesticated"!!

OMG, Rod - LOVE those pics! I must admit, I have a guilty pleasure of looking at home astronomy setups on the internet and I have visited your site before! I am intrigued by those ortho illuminator pics and particularly like that paint finish on the ortho. I have been doing a lot of paint finish an...

Bob, Since you don't have access to many American Optical scopes, here are links to a few pages of pics of some of my AO scopes. Some offer close details that catalog pics might not provide. http://www.homebuiltastronomy.com/AmericanOptical20Phase/ http://www.homebuiltastronomy.com/AO4/index.htm htt...

Re: Help! I'm becoming "domesticated"!!

Thanks, I have a lot of fun with them. My 10 on the Ortho is a dedicated darkfield stand. It has the 1096b Toric condenser, which is nice as it will fully illuminate everything from a 10x to 100x objectives. It also has the 100x Iris objective to allow for some tweaking as needed. Really a nice luxu...

Re: Help! I'm becoming "domesticated"!!

Welcome the AO Anonymous. My name is Rod and I am an AO-cholohic.... I came at it from a different angle. When I got interested in Microscopy a couple of years ago, I was looking for an affordable stand to see if it was as much fun as I imagined it to be. My first was a One Fifty, an entry level mod...

Re: Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks

I keep looking at the centric in image three. The "spots" keep alternating between raised and sunken as I view them. If I look and see them as raised, I can look away and back again and they become sunken. Anybody else, or should I see a doctor? ;^) Reversals like that are a classic optical illusio...

Yes the first form, Actinoptychus, has a good bit of relief built in, hard to miss with that one.

Thanks Pete.

I am not sure I have seen that diatom before, and the oddly shaped bit to the right of it adds some interest too.

Glad you liked it.

Puente Formation Diatoms Oblique Stacks

After encouragement from 75, I set out this afternoon to see what I could come up by way of stacking oblique images. I was concerned about artifacts from the halos that you get when changing focus point in oblique. I reduced the degree to which pushed the oblique effect and it think it helped some. ...

That structure blows me away! Who knew that it looked like that?

Great detail and stack.

I agree with 75, a dark background would be an interesting image as well.

Nicely done Kit.

Wow! This is a great image! What a cool subject, and you completely captured the fascinating and intricate form. The 3D effect is especially pronounced on the second one. 75- I dont think I have ever tried stacking with Oblique, I wonder if it would work well? It seems to me the halos might pose a problem. Any experience? I found that stacking works well with a gentle oblique. Go with subtle and let the cumulative effect of the series of images do their thing. You m...
