Re: How to avoid a question mark (?) in the topic headline
Wow!!! It's great to see how a simple matter of placing the simple question mark ?, in the right place has turned a simple question of the use of a question mark has turned into a good debating subject. Now I am going to think of another good question regarding diatoms which hopefully will turn in t...

Hi Guys, I am sorry to see you are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to sending stuff to each other, (lucky people) I mean if you each send a sample to different members then what a brilliant collection you would all have , and please give a thought for your buddies across the pond, who as yet are ...

Hi Rod, If my pitiful brain serves me well the brown would have been Bismark Brown and the red would have been Carmine that is in the Field Poppy and the Cosmos. What I like about B. Brown is that one can not overstain with it. I now need to look up some of the protocols I used a while back as I wil...

Re: A Few Colourful Stains Compared
Some really good staining on many of the specimens, do you have a timing in place for certain stains or is it trial and error? What is your methodology as I use a few different protocols when staining my botanical specimens. I found maybe one or two of your photos rather dark with what I would call ...

Hi members, A member of a small group of microscopists has aske me to show them how to make a stained botanical slide. While I feel very honoured I know need to put my thinking cap on regarding wax, stains (strength, for how long to stain etc). I thought I would give a peep at what I have done a cou...

Re: Doing Diatoms
Hi All you guys over the pond,
You have been busy and with good results as shown by the photos, also thanks for sharing the methodology for collection.
Really interesting reading the posts and studying the diatoms to come to a conclusion as to the generic make-up.
Thanks guys.

OK guys what are the bubbles in the first picture?
And what are the brown colouring and brown bubbles in the second diatom.
Bearing in mind they are rough and ready diatoms.
I will post what I think they are, easy really.
Lets go guys.

Great photos and by showing them in this mode it is relatively easy to give them an ID. I do not have my diatom books with me so will have to wait to find out the ID of them for personal interest only. Not that I am disputing any name given by you rnabholz.
Keep them coming.

Hope this helps.

Re: More from the Bayou
Very nice photos of the diatoms, I think the Amphora is A.veneta but to be positive it needs to be studied in bright field as in your photo the raphe is not clear. I hope I am not being too picky, as for the other diatoms great photos but as I have said before not good for identification purposes. T...

Hi Rodney, Sorry my friend but I do not have the mite stashed away somewhere I gave it a reprieve from a watery grave and placed it in my flower bed. I have no idea how it got to be on a single clump of pond weed. Oh well all's well that ends well. I just wondered what species the little thing is /w...

He Mite She Mite
Members whilst looking at a sample from my black bucket I saw a small black snail on a tuft of pond weed and then something moved just above it. Blow me down with a feather its a Mite. How the dickens did it get there? All it could do was to move from one floating piece of duck weed to another. I am...

Right members I think I have the answer (I could be wrong) but I would put my shirt on it being Biddulphia this was obtained from the 'diatoms of the inland waters of temperate North America' it also states Solitary or in straight or zigzag chains. Mostly Marine and Rare.
That's all folks.

Hi Rob,
It would be great if we could come up with the answer would it be possible to show the said diatom in normal brightfield? Then I would study it until I come up with an answer (right or wrong).

By the way I do not know the area you collect but is it mainly Marine environment and not freshwater? Because Pleurosira laevis in my book is a Marine diatom.
