Thanks for your comments! I think you are right. Cover glass pressure was too much.

Do anyone know what this is? Swims fast. Not slow like a Rotifer, but more elegantly.

Re: Desmids continued...

Found another one on a dried out slide. I lifted the cover glass and used water based mountant from Magnacol and shot a new stack. Seems that most are ribbed. This time 20x, DIC, 16 stack. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6845d5qti0naip3/Desmid_Closterium5_Alinda_1024.jpg?dl=1 Cropped to show more details:...

Re: Desmids continued...

Thanks Rod, Kurt and zzffnn. I did not notice any particular movement in the Desmid. It looks like it has a "ribbed design". This was the only one I found having these features. Although no movements inside, they did move around quite a bit, perhaps due to water flow under the cover glass. I ruined ...

Re: Diatom from local pond

Thanks for clarifying! I am still learning how to identify what I see... I will try to update the title. Yes, I used the BX51. I took maybe 5 different sets and most where blurry and had too much chromatic aberation. This set was OK and reasonable crisp. DIC gives different colored backgrounds depen...

Re: stains can't get it yet.

Go to the pharmacy and buy a small bottle of iodine. Very cheap. Here is one for $7. http://astore.amazon.com/laborarecipe-20/detail/B000V4RPRQ Also read this article which are trying simple food coloring agents found in super markets. Hard to find anything cheaper than that... http://www.microscopy...

Re: Limited Budget Scope

A fellow forum member just sold an Olympus KHC with phase contrast for $230. I think that was a good deal. You do not have to spend $500-$700. A beautiful piece of equipment and high quality. However, a good deal normally requires some patience and time spent on ebay searches. I am sure the Amscope ...

Re: Limited Budget Scope

i disagree that Olympus microscopes are overpriced. As always, you get what you pay for. A used quality microscope from any of the top brands usually delivers far better performance than new chinese brands. If you could live with that the equipment does not look brand new with some scuffs and marks,...

Congratulations! The Olympus high end BX-seriers are wonderful devices. I have several BX51s and VERY satisfied. I agree with your comments on pricing though... I have DIC (both for my UPlanFLuorites and my UplanSAPOs), Phase, Brightfield and Dakfield. It was a small fortune, but you don't have to b...

Re: Second "discovery" in xmas tree water

Thanks 75RR and Gecko. Yes, it is DIC. Olympus PlanFL-Ph with DIC. I get a pretty OK DIC effect even thought phase contrast objectives are not recommended for DIC. I now have added UplanSAPOs to my collection, also with DIC. Very good lenses, but horrible expensive. I have not tested them yet though...
