I use the following:

All of these instruments can be rotated along various axis and utlize generic entomological pins.

Re: How many microscopes are enough? :<)

I find myself shifting towards optimizing my existing scopes rather than considering purchasing an entire stand. Although I still look at some stereoscopes with envy and wondering if the higher resolution is really worth the cost..

The lady of the house has different opinions on the correct number of microscopes. Just mentioning.
This statement no doubts applies to many of us! Despite saying I am going to trim down I find myself looking at new scopes .....still! I am a Greedy (insert your choice of any colorful word)!

Hello Pete, My microphot is a project that will have to wait until December as I will not have time to address before going back to Costa Rica. However I will be touching base with you given I have only seen one PS for this scope on E-bay and they want abut $270 at this time. I feel this is a bit ex...

Odds are in favor of it being female ( without my actually trying to identify it) as males are rarely seen except for mating purposes. This is true of most social insects such as bees and ants. The females do all the work..wy wife concurs!

The last one look liked a "created" image via computer interpolation rather than actual photo. No doubt artifacts of the software used to touch it up. Hi, I see that you don't like the last photo and it even bothers you. I don't want to upset anyone here with my pictures, so I have just removed it....

Re: Inverted vs Stereoscope or Compound for Pond water organisms

I generally use 5-10x to spot and 20x to observe depending on the size of the organism. Based on its size and mobility I will switch up to a 40x. At 40x it can be difficult to keep an organism within the FOV unless you use a chemical/physical method to restrict its movements such as CMC or an anesth...

Thanks Apochronaut. I wouldn't be selling them, or anything for that matter, if I were not limited on space. It amazes me how truly beautiful the image is on many of the older model scopes.

Interesting. The objective I have would seem to have a longer working distance. I would guess that more than likely they are the same and only the method for ascertaining the technical specs changed.

Ahhh..the age old question. I have been as high as 30 stands and am currently at my lowest with 20. However, I am going to be selling off stands and objectives shortly given my lab has shrunk considerably. My primary focus will be entomology so will retain the 3 stereos. Trying to pare down the bio...

The optics appear clear but as mentioned the contrast, upon initial examination, appears a bit lacking. However, I simply threw ...

Re: Inverted vs Stereoscope or Compound for Pond water organisms

It's basically just two knobs which partially block light from one side or the other, though I think it is done in a fancy fashion optically. You can also slide the mirror back and forth and rotate to get varying oblique/darkfield angles, overall it is extremely nice to use. Nikon's OCC is similar ...

Re: Inverted vs Stereoscope or Compound for Pond water organisms

Lack of contrast (what I referred to as “fog” above) may be caused by spherical aberrations (for example, optical mismatch between glass / water depth). Correct collar and controlling water depth will help. Thanks Fan! I had read that the "fog" could be related to an optical mismatch. It is for thi...

Re: Inverted vs Stereoscope or Compound for Pond water organisms

Any experience with using inverted LWD objectives on an upright stand? Any benefits? I know most of us have probably tried it at one time or another. I happened to test an Olympus BH2 that had been fitted with a 10X DPlan and 60X Planapo objectives as well as a 40X0.55 LWD. The image from the LWD w...

Re: Inverted vs Stereoscope or Compound for Pond water organisms

All excellent comments Charlie and, in fact, where most of my thoughts lie. The bench space is definitely something to be considered. Slowing down specimens via CMC etc is great for the organism's anatomy but still interferes with its natural behavior. You can anesthetize them as well if behavior is...

For pond viewing, what magnifications are most useful? I would love to see the setups others are using..what works, what doesn’t I generally use the lower magnifications with 20X being my sweet spot. Re: Inverted vs Stereoscope or Compound for Pond water organisms

That seems to be the case for many of what I consider to be expensive stereoscopes. Leica scopes (MZ-series) have a tendency to be costly with relatively poor specs. You have to purchase a model MZ9.5 or higher to get a resolution higher than say an older Nikon SMZ-U or even a B&L Stereozoom 7. To ...
