Carapace Swipe:

I did a quick slide swipe of the turtle shell this afternoon, carapace swipe, a low resolution photo at 400x. Not sure what this is.

Re: Nature Today:

The meal in that picture Eddie was pizza crust, but they do like any type of bread it seems. It took a few years for some of them to be more comfortable around us. They also like dry pet food, in particular dry cat food, so do the fish. The real pet is the turtle eating, that one will follow you aro...

Re: Nature Today:

I did take a microscope slide swap a couple years back. This reveals a very interesting world and easy to obtain from the carapace. I will try one from the carapace and one from the plastron possibly later today. It doesn`t take long for the slide to dry up and the micro organisms restricted in move...

Nature Today:

Camera shot of our local pond turtles today wanting a hand out. Good example of not to feed them unless you want to. We have at least 8 that will follow us on the pond dam wanting a hand out. All of them seem to be in excellent condition without being fed.

I will try to obtain a fresh adult sample Eddie, we do have them in my area, may take a certain amount of time. They can be quick but a night light and net can work.

Re: Pond Water Beetle:

Thanks gekko. Illumination was from a 10 or 12 watt bulb at the base of the microscope. The red effect is from a red glass filter I place in line with the microscope condenser to give a more subtle effect for my old eyes, top illumination was done with a white LED light aprox. 45 degree angle onto t...

Re: Pond Water Beetle:

Thanks, looks like I have a good many young ones swimming around close to the surface of our pond. I netted one that was 2.5 inches in body length a few years back. The adults carry the eggs underneath the abdomen until they hatch. And I think it is the male that carries the eggs???. Pond life is ou...

Pond Water Beetle:

I think this is what they call the giant water beetle. This specimen is very small and young. Single 69kb picture taken at 60x. The sting can be very painful, and you can see what they use.

Re: Fruit Fly Compound Eye Structure:

This is the way I catch them. Pour one ounce of grape wine with alcohol that is, and pour into open container and wait. I`m sure other wines will work. If you have fruit flies around they will find the wine. They will drink the wine and get drunk, I then pick them up with a tooth pick or something a...

Re: Fruit Fly Compound Eye Structure:

Thanks for the extra information John. The fruit fly head was removed. Picture taken at 100x low camera resolution. This is not a very good picture but you may be able to make out the compound eye structures. Also the other eye has collapsed.

Re: Fruit Fly Compound Eye Structure:

Ok I will try to capture a decent picture of the fruit fly eye and head area. The specimen on the slide has dried up and the general points of my interest seem to have collapsed for the compound eye structures, I should be able to obtain a fresh one soon. I may be able to hydrate this eye section fo...

Fruit Fly Compound Eye Structure:

I was just looking at the compound eye structure of a fruit fly I have on the slide. This is a very small fly that seems to be more prevalent in my area this year, I may try to capture a few pictures through the microscope of the general head area. For now the eye structure looks real good, anyone t...

Minature Aquarium:

I sometimes use this thick glass low profile candle holder for a small aquarium. The weight of it keeps it in place for manipulation of pond life etc. while viewing. Fits very easy under my stereo scope and works with my compound microscopes fitted with low powered short objectives.

Anyway this was an older simple 3 lens unit, but took days to get it aligned back right and to make sure all the elements were cl...

Re: Is this delamination or fungus?

I have a special holder I use for a single objective that is held in place with a swing in or out lab stand arm mounted underneath my stereo scope to look into problem objectives. This gives me a good idea of what the general condition of the objective is; scratched up, just dirty, delamination, or ...

Very nice images gekko I like them. I have always been interested in fresh water biology esp. more so in my retirement years. These groups do represent a very large system and which a good many can be parasitic. The size of these groups can be all over the place but generally you can view a good man...

Small Insect Specimens:

I have an interest for small insect specimens, esp. the aquatic forms of early development from water to land and really all forms. The microscopic forms seem really interesting to me and I was wondering if anyone had a few photos to share of early development.

This is the worm I have in my photo`s. Actually this one is a larva stage of an aquatic insect I think, I had the species wrote down at one time. The resolution is very poor since I took the photo off of my computer screen.

My Old Microscope:

My oldest working microscope of several others is this 1898 Bausch and Lomb monocular. I use this microscope a lot because it continues to provide good results. It was all froze up and filthy when I purchased it but I only gave 27 bucks for it.
