Re: Which Microscope?

Thanks for your input 'hobby'. Apex are actually part of Brunel microscopes, marketed either from them direct, or via Amazon. They are cheaper than their Brunel badged porfolio. That said, some of the 'end user' reviews, if they are to be believed, are quite good. You are right about the Bresser, so...

Which Microscope?

I'm playing a 'long shot' here, in the hope that someone may actually have, or used one of these two microscopes. I posed a related question in my earlier post (Chinese Microscopes), and am fully aware of the potential pitfalls of buying a budget Chinese microscope, albeit much of it based on 'hear ...

Micscape online Magazine

I am led to believe that the long established Micscape Magazine (online), provided by Maurice Smith and David Walker, is seeing a diminishing number article submissions. This is apparently a threat to its continued existence, as it relies on the submission of articles to retain interest in the site....

Careful Alan, it might become a really friendly forum, where people actually use their names, and say in what part of the world they reside, that would never do ;)

Re: Chinese microscope manufacturers overview

If I were purchasing my first microscope, I wouldn’t hesitate to get a basic Chinese microscope to start with. Learn all I could using it, until I decided which aspect of the hobby appealed to me the most and then look for a scope with the features I need to go there. Radazz Yep, start from the gro...

Re: Chinese microscope manufacturers overview

Ashamed and admit is a bit strong. You are right Alan, 'ashamed' is a bit strong, but inferior is often a good description. I run an amateur photography forum/group, and it not unusual for a newcomer to say "I have only got an 'xyz' camera". And we make of point of telling them that we all started ...

Re: Chinese microscopes

Hi Dave, as far as I can remember Swift was an old/ancient british microscope maker. Later there was an american company importing japanese instruments like the FM-31 under this name, 1970s on. Todays Swift offerings look different than the rest of the bunch, but they also seem to be located higer ...

Re: Chinese microscopes

Following extensive on-line information gathering, I am currently considering the Swift range of Chinese microscope, as my 'dipping the toe in the water' venture into microscopy. It seems that there are some 15 factories in China making microscopes, with online importers/retailers procuring from any...

Re: Chinese microscopes

I would agree Bob, only a fool would disclose too much personal information on an internet forum, and yes there can only be so many Bob's and Dave's registered in one place. Therefore, a non descript user name is sometimes essential, but it creates for much friendly atmosphere, when conversing with ...

Re: Chinese microscope manufacturers overview

What we need here is a maintained list of models of Chinese scopes that have 'passed the test': models that someone who knows microscopes can vouch for. I realize this may be a moving target, since the suppliers may change, for an Amscope, e.g., while still retaining the model designation, but it's...

Re: Chinese microscopes

What I don't know, and perhaps you, or someone here can enlighten me, is the situation with microscope objective lenses. Are the achromats just basic single glass element construction, or are they doublets. Moving up to plan objectives, are these of triplet element construction. ?? Hi Dave, an achr...

Re: Chinese microscopes

Since you have been involved with telescopes, I thought I would pass this along but you are already probably aware of this critical difference between microscopes and telescopes. It is one thing that many telescope users miss, when they switch over to microscopes and it can cause a bit of confusion...

Re: Chinese microscopes

Here is another question :) Given that most 4 objective microscopes come with 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x (oil immersion) objectives fitted, is it better to swap the 100x (oil) for a 60x objective. From what I read, unless you are interested in bacteria, the 100x would be rarely used, and that for most s...

Re: Chinese microscopes

You make a valid point apochronaut, re achromatic lenses, and chromatic aberration (CA). When I started out in astro-imaging I started out with a doublet achromatic refractor (two different dispersion acro lenses cemented together,) which while better at limiting CA than a single element (basic) acr...

The 'best of the bunch'

I did mention this in one of my 'posts', but its definitely worth a mention here. I have to say, that this forum has been the most welcoming, and responsive. Thanks to ...

Re: Chinese microscopes

Thanks Roldorf, very informative. The Bresser is definitely my 'short list'. As has been discussed in this 'thread', I don't think it matters whose name it carries, they are all sourced from China, and its only the degree of quality control that decides whether you get a good one, one that's below p...

That sounds like the ideal shopping trip Roldorf. I would very much enjoy that. Ah, so the Bresser link was with Meade, and not Celestron, I knew there was a link with a major telescope brand, thanks for that info a Roldorf. Re: Chinese microscopes

Hi Hobbys46, and thank you for your welcome. There are two such suppliers in the UK that I am aware of, and they are Brunel, and GT Vision. Re: Chinese microscopes

Thank you for your input Scarodactyl. As I said to 75RR, its not a matter of cost, but more will microscopy inspire me enough to pursue it, and as I said £300 is not a 'big deal', and if I decide to upgrade, I likely wouldn't bother trying to sell it, but donate it to the local school. At this stage...
