Re: Pholcus phalangioide
Hmmm. since this is not a trinocular I am guessing you are using an eyepiece camera. Correct? I have found that the fewer optics between the camera and the specimen can often result in cleaner and clearer images. Mastering lighting is essential. You are quite good at it! I, on the other hand, still ...

Beautiful image, einman...actually it resembles the avatar of Charles Krebs in forum: macrophotography! Only trouble is- with me growing a beard, I am starting to look like that. As I remember Wolf Spiders do not have webs. The two or so times I saw them they had a hole going under the cement back porch bottom step. -Dennis Generally they do not make webs. I extracted this one from the web of a cobwe...

I see you are enjoying the objective I sold you!! I very much enjoy the oblique effects. How did you achieve that? Are you using a LOMO oblique condenser? I have a LOMO oblique condenser that I hoped to modify to fit one of my stands.

Re: Newest Zeiss Standard DIC Aquisition
DIC Epi systems are quite common. I often wonder why. I assume it is because the electronics industry used EPI-DIC much more than did the Biological research community use transmitted DIC.

Some stacked shots of the same specimen using my camera and a Leitz 2.5X objective rather than my stereoscope. http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt43/balaormiga/2015-10-27%2016-33-22%20BR22S4.jpg I find that the SMZ-U is much quicker for observing/examining and as can be seen in the first pic a qui...

Generally they can not. Though there are exceptions. There are species that specialize in enticing spiders on their webs to "come out" so they can pounce upon them. Such spiders in the Salticidae family genus Portia have been observed to even use "tools' such as small twigs to vibrate the potential ...

I was responding to the "pl" as I cant say I have ever noticed an asterisk. Usually "strain free" objectives had a red dot when made by Leitz and sometimes a P.

AO DIC systems are quite rare. Mine was complete. In speaking with Doug Bolden of Bolden instruments a 4th generation Microscope Repair/service shop he stated he and his father had only seen one example before.
It is the only complete system I have ever seen on E-bay.

He was already dead! Actually- If I see them in the house I let them roam. Unless someone freaks out and then I put them out. We do not kill spiders in our house. Now a Black widow..Recluse etc would be a different story.

Here is a photo of H. helluo. Initially I thought it might be H. georgicola but there was no leg banding. Another possibility was H. carolensis but the abdomen was not black on the underside. Final conclusion was H. helluo. She ( it is a female) measures 18mm in length. She wandered into my lab. How...

Re: using oil objectives without oil
Though you can use an immersion objective without the oil you would lose any advantages of the higher na. In fact it wold fall below that of regular dry objectives and tend to have less color and contrast as well. Though I have seen some immersion objectives that did not perform too bad without the ...

Gekko- I have a stand that should work well with your Stereoscope that has both fine and coarse focus. If interested PM me. I will probably put it up for sale in the near future.

I had a house fire Jan 2013. Lost most of our material belongings and 2 pets. Yes it was quite traumatic as we moved from hotel to hotel to a rental house while insurance settled things. Not to mention each and every day you realize what you no longer have. We were fortunate in that we escaped the h...

Re: A comparison of algorithms for stacking vs the unstacked image.
einman, please excuse my dumb questions: I thought the images were taken using your stereo scope. Does your stereo scope has fine focus? Are you using one of the old high quality separate microscope lights with a field diaphragm? I am using a Nikon SMZ-U stereoscope which has a built in diaphragm. ...

Re: A comparison of algorithms for stacking vs the unstacked image.
I did some additional measurements today. Each full turn of turn of the fine focus knob moves the objective approx 2.39mm. I was turning the fine focus about 18 degrees with each turn. That would come to about .119 mm. Given the DOF is about 1.06 mm it would take about 9 turns to exceed the DOF. So o...

Re: my microscopes
I "use the force". I have a Leiz Dialux 22EB. You can exchange teh turrets in seconds also. I purchased 2 additional turrets. The idea is to have the turrets contain a set of objectives for a specific task. One turret will hold all immersion objectives for example or perhaps all low mag or phase etc.

Re: A comparison of algorithms for stacking vs the unstacked image.
Well after some digging I came up with some DOF data on my scope. Using a 10X eyepiece at 7.5x, for example, with the diaphragm open, it is 1.36 mm. with the diaphragm at max it is 17.4mm. A huge difference. When you jump to 40X it drops to 0.09 mm and 1.2 mm respectively. It is not linear. I took t...
