Amoebae phagocytosis

Hi folks, I've learnt a new fancy new word today. Hope I'm using it in the correct way. Anyway, I was playing around with a small drop of water from a water trough yesterday when I got these images. I think the food is a paramecium ? I've been trying to get some images of these speedsters for ages. ...

Re: Freshwater Pond Critter

Thanks Bruce, That's a whole bundle of mysteries solved :) I hadn't heard of chytrid sporangium. But a read of wiki and a google image search has provided answers to many questions. I had thought the "round brown things" were some sort of parasite. Here's the wiki article for those interested. https...

Re: Freshwater Pond Critter

Interesting thought Bruce. I know what they are in a terrestrial sense but hadn't thought of them as aquatic. A quick google doesn't turn up much but will have a better look later. I also spy that the first image seems to have gone missing from this post, no biggie, it didn't have any detail to it. ...

Freshwater Pond Critter

Hi Folks, Can anyone point me in the right direction for an id of these critters ? They look like an embryo to me. They're attached to the algae by a triangular tether. Approximately 30 - 40 microns. There's nothing in the water sample that is big enough to lay these, plenty of rotifers a few vortic...

Re: Lepocinclis and a couple of Diatoms

Hi Hobbyst46, They are cut from their original background in Photoshop and the background replaced. CA and other fringing etc sort of fixed. Lepocinclis is a stack. All critters alive in an "aquarium" I made on a slide. Mounting diatoms or anything this small is well beyond my skill set. I'm in awe ...

Re: Wild Plan Fluotar

Hi folks, 75RR If the price of the objectives are reasonable and funds permit I would recommend that you purchase them. The correct eyepieces will eventually appear - just a matter of time. Yes the price is really reasonable, especially when compared to ebay prices. But this is a working microscope,...

Re: Wild Plan Fluotar

Hi folks, 75RR, Yes I tested it with the wide field Chinese eyepieces that I have. The catalogue hinted that it didn't need correction eyepieces and the dealer I got it from tried it with Olympus eyepieces and saw no problems. It was worth a try. Finding a pair of Wild wide field eyepieces in NZ, wo...

Re: Wild Plan Fluotar

Well finally got the 10x for a trial. Unfortunately, it's no hidden gem :( By comparison with my Chinese acro the ca was worse. It definitely was not flat, way worse than the acro. It also had a yellow tinge to the image, of course easy to fix photographically but my eyes never adjusted to it. The r...

Re: Freshwater Crawler

Hi Rick, Thanks for the id. I checked the New Zealand Organisms Register, our list of everything known to live in NZ and Chaetogaster diaphanus does live down here. The only other is Chaetogaster diastrophus. There were all sorts of small critters and a few rotifers in that water sample so it's quit...

Chaetogaster Diaphanus

Hi folks,
This critter came out of the debris from the bottom of a water trough.
It appeared to graze on the pieces of algae as it swam around.
It was possibly 5mm long.
Head is to the right.
Thanks

Re: Wild Plan Fluotar

Michael,
Thanks for that lovely catalogue, classic 60's and nicely scanned.
Full of great info as well.
Based on the descriptions of the eyepieces etc it seems that they are flat and corrected.
Will grab the 10x and see how that goes.
Cheers

Wild Plan Fluotar

Hi folks, Does anyone remember these objectives and how they performed ? I'm guessing they have to be 40yrs old ? I've found 3 a 3X/0.1, 10X/0.25, 40X/0.65 and figure they would go well with my M20. Like most of the objectives I see I can find very little to nothing about them. Did these require a m...

Thanks folks, Hobbyst46, I'm using a 10W led, nothing fancy, just an led and driver screwed to a heat sink with a half ping pong ball for a diffuser. It origionally came with an underpowered red chinese bulb, I then put in a 20W halogen, that was good but it evaporated the small drops of water the c...

Hydra viridissima

Hi folks, These are growing on the inside of one of my freshwater jars. They are only a few mm long and expand and contract on stalks with a holdfast on the jars surface. A week ago they were quite pale, I guess they are filtering algae to turn them green. Some now are growing new branches as seen i...

Zeiss Objective Markings

Hi folks, Does anyone know of a list of the Zeiss specific marking on their objectives ? Google has failed me on this. Currently I'm looking at a Zeiss Jena GF-Planachromat 40/0.65, Phv 160/0.17-C I have no idea what the GF means, though I see many for sale on Ebay in different forms. Also the C at ...

Re: Daphnia

Hi JGardener, Basically it wasn't perfectly still. The heart and gills were still moving, though at a decreased rate. There was antennae movement. Some bluring I left, (the gills) others I replaced in the final image by cloning in the parts from the sharp images. The Daphnia was in a small drop of G...
