Zeiss serial numbers
Does anyone know if there is a serial number list for dating Zeiss microscopes? Interested primarily in Carl Zeiss logo 1950s black standard scopes. Just bought what I believe to be a Standard “junior” from that period. Just started searching for information. I’ll post pictures after it arrives. Loo...

Tried glycerin to slow down fast movers
Tried glycerin to slow down protozoa. Environmental disaster. What wasn't killed outright, exploding or horribly deformed, looked like this one. (A few were slightly more mobile) The survivors were flattened to the point that all internal functions are shut down. All trichocysts seem to have fired, ...

Re: Paramecia doing paramecium stuff
I suspect the stock came in with the plants. They were in there for several weeks before the fish.
I will try a control of distilled water and fish food to see if the food contains them, I doubt it but I must remain objective.

Re: Paramecia doing paramecium stuff
Very informative video. What is the volume of the culture ? is it kept indoors or outdoors ? I have a little one gallon tank with a beta living in it. I put a flat rock where any food that goes to the bottom ends up there. I noticed a few paramecium in that debris, so I sucked up all I could with a...

Does RetroDiode put a fan on them now? Or is that your improvement?
Mine don’t get too hot. I rest my hand on the one for the Wild Heerbrugg M20 while fine focusin and it never gets more than pleasantly warm.

Re: Advice for microscope for microphotography
Welcome to the forum! I’ve found most of the stereo microscopes in my collection move the center of focus when taking photos for stacking.
Picoley will let you align the images while stacking.
I’m sure there are better stacking options out there, but this one does all I’ve needed so far.

Paramecium Division
This is the second division I watched. The first while I waited for the old slow laptop to start up. In both cases it looked as if there was an attendant individual which helped with the division. Or it could be just a very delectable cloud of bacteria attracting them both. I am of course speculatin...

Does anyone know, was Zeiss the first manufacturer to focus by moving the stage up and down as opposed to moving the body?

Re: Inverted vs. Upright Microscopes
These are nice little scopes! I tried one of the smallest glass bottom Petri dishes I could find, and it’s still really unwieldy in the field. Double sized cover slips work well. I’ve found I really only need to invert a prepared slide when using the 40x objective. Very nice for a quick check of a s...

Recently cleaned and reset up the aquarium, and got a beta. What food he doesn't eat falls onto a flat quartz rock in the aquarium. This breeds all kinds of nice stuff. I was trying to capture images of paramecium when this fellow showed up. Never seen this one before. The spots are along the length...

Re: Nikon Type S microscope illumination
There is a company called RetroDiode that makes led illuminators for a lot of classic microscopes. I have one for the Zeiss standard with the tunnel from the back of the base to the field lens, and one for my Wild Heerbrugg M20s. I also use the Zeiss illuminator on my Olympus SZ40 stereoscope. They ...

Re: Chinese microscope manufacturers overview
Not really sure I have a dog in this fight. Before I started collecting microscopes, and began to find the opportunities that go with it, I bought a Chinese student microscope which I learned to take pictures through. I used it quite a bit. Learned a lot about filters and illumination with it. Right...
