Re: Pandorina Morum

Wow, excellent image! Amazing detail! I might have missed a previous post where this information is available but what scope/objectives are you using? Your DIC images are very impressive! The scope is an Olympus BX51. I have UplanFl-Ph 5-100X, UplanSAPO 5-100X and MPlan/LMPlan 1.25-100X If I rememb...

Re: Pandorina Morum

Can this be a better identification? I found this in a book:

Protozoological Monographs - Wilhelm Foisser and Martin Kreutz.

It is an excellent book!

Looks VERY similar. Eudorina Elegant.

Nice selection! I think my avatar is in there!

Now, can we see close-ups of each and one, with the 10x, 20x, 40x and 60x in Phase, Brightfiled, dark field and oblique. And all possible combinations of above. 8-) ;)

Thank you all for your comments! I had great fun with this series. Too bad I forgot to take a stack with the 5X objective. I only got half the body on picture. And by the way...   I am ashamed. Insects don't have blood or blood vessels. They have Trachea. Air pipes which transport...

Great catch! In image 2 it looks like you have a spirogyra. Also I can clearly see the diatoms and yes, they are a life form.

Aquatic Insect Larvae

I was browsing through a bottle of water from my local ponds when I found this one. I believe it is an aquatic insect larvae, possible a Mayfly, but the size is very small. Around 2-3 mm. 10X objective https://www.dropbox.com/s/t682mjyfv90bf3g/Larvae_half_body_1_1024.jpg?dl=1 The head and eye seems ...

Really nice image. Do you have polarising options? I seem to remember Charles (Krebs) posting a very colourful image similar to yours but with extra colour via crossed polars. Might be barking up the wrong tree.... (Oh and I realise that you may not have the critter in question now but maybe next t...

Excellent work: a very beautiful, colorful, sharp image that shows the building blocks of the shell very nicely. I'm with 75RR that I don't think that the 2nd image adds anything to what the first shows. Thank you! Well, the second image adds value as I mostly use mobile devices for viewing. Also, ...

Have you counted the number of lakes and ponds?

I find fountains are also a good source to collect samples from.

Testate Amoeba - Difflugia Acuminata (From the Royal samples)

I found this one when browsing through the sample. At first, I thought is was a small rock, but I went back and saw the beauty and symmetric shape. 40X, Polarized light. 23 images in stack. I am NOT sure about the identification, but it looks like Difflugia Acuminata. Testate amoebae build a test or...

The Royal Collection

Last week I collected water samples from the ponds at the garden of the Royal Palace in Sweden "Drottningholm". It is a short walk from my home and the condition seemed perfect. I cannot understand why I have not collected sample from these ponds before as I basically can see it from my house. Small...

Re: Curious Bacteria or Fungi or ?

If you look at things at 1000x magnifications and they are hotdog shaped (rod shaped), it is most likely bacteria. They are everywhere. At that level of magnification, the microscope is extremely sensitive to vibration. If you touch the scope, even the slightest, fiddling with iPhone on top of the e...

Hmm, yes. I think you may be correct. My identification skills are not the best either. Pandorina sp. is perhaps a safer bet. Re: Pandorina Morum

Beautiful image, captured the mucilage nicely - like the paler background as well. Do you have a size for it? 46 stack. That is a lot (very good stack by the way) but then it would need a large number to capture so much depth. Each internal cell has two flagella and an eyespot. Think I can make out...

Pandorina Morum

Green Algae - Pandorina Morum I assume. 20X objective. 46 stack. DIC. The colony is held together by a surrounding gel (mucilage). Each internal cell has two flagella and an eyespot. The colonies coordinate their flagellar movement to create a rolling, swimming motion. Finally after the water starte...

Volvox can vary quite a bit in size, it's possible you just got an unusually large one that time? Here's a shot through a Canon 60mm macro lens with extension tubes showing a bunch of Volvox, a Conochilus colony, and an Ostracod for size comparison. I have examined Volvox under cover slips on gener...
