Re: A rotifer and some very odd orange things
Nice images. I am going to go for Haematococcus on the ID of the "orange balls" See link http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3269&p Thanks a ton for the identification! Whenever I post a photo on here not knowing what it is someone always knows. So, new discovery for m...

Re: A rotifer and some very odd orange things
Nice darkfield. Hello! Actually, these aren't darkfield. I used an LED light that I bought from Ikea and illuminated them from above. It actually works quite well, although I could use a much brighter LED light. One of the nice things about this techniques is the rotifers behaved normally when lit ...

A rotifer and some very odd orange things
Hello! I haven't posted in awhile so I thought I'd share a couple photos I took recently. One is of a large rotifer I found in my partially frozen birdbath. There are actually a huge number of these guys in the sample I took and they are quite large -- About 500 microns or so long. You can see them ...

Resistance is futile. I'm glad to hear that someone out there enjoys my little videos. I don't know how long this recent ...

Re: Dileptus eats a rotifer
Another amazing video! It was interesting that the rotifer didn't seem to try to get away; I wonder if had died before the Dileptus discovered it. Or, does that protist have poison? Even then, I would expect some kind of reaction from the rotifer. Very interesting -- Thanks for posting! Edit: They d...

Re: A couple new photos; a stylonchia and a paramecium
Very nice! :) The first one is probably Tetmemena pustulata . In 1997, Stylonychia pustulata and S. vorax were moved to a new genus...first named Clara , later changed to Tetmemena Eigner, 1997. Stylonychia putrina hasn't been formally moved, but is typically narrower than your critter (width ~1/3 ...

Re: A couple new photos; a stylonchia and a paramecium
Both very nice and nice of them to pose. Hard to get them to sit still long enough. What shutter speed? Thanks! To get these guys to slow down I cheated and used Protoslo; that helped a lot. Otherwise it would have been impossible to get good photos of these guys; they are very quick movers. I don'...

A couple new photos; a stylonchia and a paramecium
Greetings all! Here are a couple new photos I took last night. The first photo is of one of my favorite protists; a stylonchia. I like them because of how they scamper about the microscopic world like a tiny one-celled cockroach. I've always found them very fun to watch. For the stylonchia I photogr...

That is really quite awesome -- That kid has some amazing parents. I would love an SEM, but I certainly don't have the technical smarts to make it happen. I could make room for one though... Re: Lacrymaria olor loses its head trying to eat a coleps
What an amazing video! I just read that the Coleps has toxicysts that it uses to immobilize its prey; I wonder if these had any effect on the Lacrymaria (it takes several minutes for the poison to work). Really a very fascinating video -- A person can learn quite a bit from the posts in these forums!

Thanks a ton for the info -- That really helps. Now, because these mites are so small I wonder how to work with them effectively; perhaps do all of what you said in your post under the stereoscope?
