Re: Nostoc

This is such common stuff where I'm at (pssst, yeah you too Bill) that I'd even call it ubiquitous. But I've always known it simply as cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. Thank you Seb for giving it a more specific name that I never knew about, as I have actually been studying this very thing a lot ...

Well ... could maybe possibly be helpful if ya might say what brand nail polish y'all are talking about... :?:

I'm a Sally Hansen's Hard-As-Nails man myself. (As most fly tiers who use clear nail polish for head cement are.) Haven't really tried it for slide making (yet).

Re: Change Objectives or whole Scope?

Is the Nikon e600 frame at all comparable to the American Optical model 10? It's a very interesting question from my standpoint since I own and have direct experience with both stands. They're difficult for me to compare since my AO 10 is capable of bright field, dark field, (bright) phase contrast...

Re: Magnesium Sulfate Crystals

This is great stuff! Your experiments with light manipulation make me want to use flowery phrases like "painting with light" and "artistic" and such. But as regards using microscopes to resolve minute detail, where some might say it matters the most, it's definitely kicking butt in that department a...

Re: Change Objectives or whole Scope?

I appreciate the BMW vision of Apochronaut, but, since this is a secondary hobby for me, I would like to keep the vision more in the line of Chevolet or Toyota and under $400. No disrespect intended, but I got quite a laugh out of "since this is a secondary hobby for me". Only a secondary hobby? Wh...

How wonderfully nice and interesting to see this species in live form for a change! (I have been studying gyrosigma and pleurosigma frustules pretty intently for the past few days while putting my new microscope through its paces.)

Always so nice (read: instructive) to get views of all sides! You say you added a phase condenser, but what about phase objectives? First time I've ever seen, or noticed, a side-mounted lamp - interesting. It's neat to see the "different" style trinoc head. Still digging those epi objectives, would ...

VERY interesting! I can't recall ever seeing this before, is it common for amoeba and such critters to construct tests of diatoms? Wonder if they use living diatoms or expended frustules? Dang, I'm not sure where to even begin looking...!

First DIC Image

Nothing I've overly proud of, this is a quickie taken with the MU300 stuffed into one of the eyepiece tubes as I continue to await my T2 adapter for the Canon T3i. But I wanted to see how well the view might come out on film, so to speak. I'm absolutely knocked out by how much detail DIC reveals in ...

75RR, I hear what you're saying, and eagerly anticipated the round stage for precisely the reasons you give. By no means do I wish to lose the rotating stage, just thinking about options. The experts believe the meteor was traveling at about 9 miles second when it entered the atmosphere... That's the sort of thing that just fascinates me to no end -- saying "9 miles per second" is real easy, but comprehending it is almost impossible. At that kind of speed, hitting Earth's atmosphere...

Fan & Charles, thanks - that got me fixed up perfectly. I have lots of filters laying around, but didn't need to hunt because good old Paul provided quite a stash of various filters with the Zeiss. I dialed back the voltage as suggested, plopped a light blue filter over the illuminator field lens, a...
