Converting a Nice BH-2 into a Nasty Frankenscope??
Back around the first of the year I finally got my hands on my "dream scope": an Olympus stand with planapo objectives and DIC. In this case a BHS BH-2. I had a BX stand for a while, but learned I simply can't afford the infinity stuff but TL 160 is doable and plenty good enough for me. Before this ...

Re: Black Zeiss WL
Thanks, I appreciate that! I'm almost sorry to say I've moved on to my "dream stand", an Olympus BHS BH-2 with DIC and full complement of Splanapo objectives. It's even nicer to peer through than the lovely old Zeiss, but will never be as much fun to look AT. But I did graft that splendid Zeiss rota...

Re: Black Zeiss WL
Here are a few. Nothing special about 'em, just what was quick to come up with. Most of my imaging through the WL use the 63x/1.4 planapo, as I believe all of these are. There are more images in my Flickr album, link in the sig line below. Caloneis lewisii 63x DIC red compensator.jpg Caloneis lewis...

Thanks Charles. And what kind of heat are you using, butane torch or alcohol lamp or what? The micro torch runs awful hot, but that can be mitigated with distance. I have trouble getting consistent flame action with alcohol lamps.

Re: New Diatom Project
Charles, I finally made it home today, and wonder if you can point me to your needle-pulling discussions, and/or anything else on the subject you think worthy of attention? I intend to revisit the needle-puller apparatus that Keith has been working on, as it especially piques my interest. But I have...

Re: New Diatom Project
I'm admiring how fine your needle is!
I know you've discussed needle-pulling, but I have been unable to do anything in the lab because I haven't seen my home since February. But when I do get back, that's one thing I want to tackle right off: improving on my needles.

Re: Incoming! Olympus BH-2 ...and a question please
It's the same thing, really, whereas telescopes suffer from "scattered light" because they're seldom properly baffled, particularly at the focuser. Yes, OT, but I had to say it....there is far more scattered light in a telescope...

That's one of the nicest presentations I've seen yet for describing the very confounding shape of these things.
Wonder if you might add a comment or two on how you manipulated the specimen to get your various perspectives? Again, nicely done!

Re: Inverted microscopes
Are inverted scopes better for observing pond microorganisms? No such thing as a 'better' scope for observing anything ... it depends on what kind of observing you have in mind. For example, I'd argue that the best scope for observing pond critters when first looking into a sample container is the ...

I'll add another endorsement for Michel Haak at diatoms.nl. I've been doing business with him for some years now, and he's always been a delight to trade with. His cleaned sample material is indeed wonderful for making your own slides, and his finished slides are likewise first class. The diatoms sh...

Yes, a most excellent image of a diatom I personally know to be the very devil to get a good image of. Lovely diatoms, and images of them. Well done, sir.
Try tapping harder and see if you get even better results?
Always seem to be plenty of diatoms to be found when one picks some up with tweezers and taps lightly on a slide.
