Re: Squatinella Rotifer

Nice! I haven't run across one of these in a long time, yet it remains one of my more memorable finds for some reason.

I always wonder where in the world that name comes from?

Re: Continuing Adventures with the Zeiss WL

Tim, if you want my opinion of Nanodyne products, this is my second one - how's that? The first one came with my BHS BH-2, which I purchased from a member of this forum, and although the 100W lamphouse was also included, I never used it so I never compared them. All I know is that the Nanodyne prov...

Thanks for the kind comments, all! Doran: Yes, the wooden riser is self made. But I'm an old cabinetmaker among other things, so it was the easiest thing I did all day. Wes: I'm not sure I understand the question? There's a PK 2.5x photo 'eyepiece' inside the photo tube if that's what you're asking?...

Continuing Adventures with the Zeiss WL

Ever since I got an Olympus BHS BH-2, some folks have wondered what shall become of my old Zeiss WL? Nothing drastic, I will be hanging on to it. As I've often said: it's one microscope that's as much fun to look at as look through, and will be displayed as art in my home if absolutely nothing else....

Re: Just A Few Diatoms

Indeed, diatoms.org is probably the primary go-to resource for any diatom enthusiast, and particularly so for those of us in the US. But it's far from a complete/definitive key, and in fact with diatoms there is no such thing. Meanwhile, the Navicula genus is one of the largest groups, and it'd be e...

Fan! Abandon the Black Beauty?! Perish the thought! No, I haven't abandoned it - to the contrary, in fact, I've upgraded it with a Nanodyne LED. But I've wanted an Olympus for so long that now that I have it I can hardly tear myself away from it. I love your question regarding the C. lewisii form, a...

Just A Few Diatoms

I just got home from another long road trip - I believe I've been on the road more than at home so far this year, whew! Anyway, it's sure nice to settle back in my beautiful lovely lab and play around with super duper microscopes, which is always so luxurious after using my less well equipped travel...

Re: Craticula cuspidata

I don't think anybody wrings out a Zeiss planapo 63/1.4 quite like 75RR! It's a very nice shot; Craticula isn't easy to resolve, and it's even more challenging to resolve in an image. Here, it's been neatly and cleanly done.

Should anyone care to elaborate on the retrocerebral organ, I would be happy to hear it. I tried a brief search, but in truth I have little time for it just now but would still like to learn a bit more. PS: Squatinella is an old favorite of mine too, such an interesting character to happen across in...

Thanks again, all! Your kind words are truly humbling... In other news, what appeared to be filamentous algae has been revealed under the microscope to be vast numbers of diatoms inhabiting mucilaginous tubes formed by the cells of the colony, reminding millions of urban freeways during rush hour. Rockport, Texas Diatoms

I was obliged to spend a week in the seaside town of Rockport, Texas recently, attending to some business that wasn't exactly pleasant. But making the best of the situation, I took time during the last day to collect some samples hoping for some great marine diatoms. I was not disappointed. I collec...
