Re: A super abstract photo of a water bear
Have you ever read much Mark Twain? One of his unfinished pieces was something with the working title, Which Was The Dream?, which was a story that involved the shrinking of a man and his family down to microscopic size and being placed in a drop of water, on a slide, under a microscope, in a dream....

Do you suppose he can see your eye looking back at him? (Yes, I know it is a camera looking at him, but that's beside the point.)

Re: I have no idea what I did wrong.
So, I was using my microscope,................... While using it, I was attempting to use the 100x objective lens, with a 10x eyepiece, and I put a drop of oil on the glass cover, and attempted to focus. Yet, I couldn't get it to focus right. So, I'm very confused why. Thanks for the help! Hello: Y...

Re: Spencer 5 with Heine Condenser
Hi Charles I have probably a luxury problem, because I have both types condensor, but not the time to test them properly, family and work takes time. I have a Zetopan to Polyphos condensor, and it is not always easy to use, you should be aware if you buy such, that the front lens can be unclear, I ...

Hi, Pat. I've not viewed many micro-videos before, so that's the first video I've ever seen of a tardigrade. I thought it was very good! I can understand better now why they are called waterbears. In fact, I believe I could even discern what looked like bear claws! If that is one of your first video...

What?! Oklahoma is still there? Given all the bad weather of the last few weeks, I'm surprised, but I suppose it has endured worse at times.
Anyway... welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find that you have much in common with others here.

Re: AO Spencer cardioid oil Darkfield Condenser
Maybe mine is not 328F? I was told that it is likely a 328F. Though we don't know for sure. I tried that condenser on my AO series 4 again this morning. It fits tightly on 4's dovetail - I was not able to move it at all, once holding screw on my 4 has been tightened (there was no visible movement n...

Additionally the review article - if one scrolls down - mentions several other illumination arrangements. For example other Watson models are powered off line or mains voltage and require a different bulb: 25 watts at either 100-120 or 200-250 volts. Still another - with the rheostat built into the ...

Allthejunkgenes, Hello! And welcome to the forum. The link above reviews the Watson 70 microscope ( http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artdec09/iw-watson70.html ) and shows several photos of the bulb needed for it. Re: AO Spencer cardioid oil Darkfield Condenser
Mine is a catalog number 328 according to the certificate that came in the box with it. It is in one of the older leatherette covered cases, so it must be pretty old. I suppose it could be missing such a lens as you speak of, but there really doesn't seem to be room in the body once the bulb and soc...

Re: AO Spencer cardioid oil Darkfield Condenser
Well, Fan, if you have tried the condenser on your series 4 scope and it fits as you say, then I'll just have to accept your word for it. :D But it certainly is a puzzlement to me. Only explanation I can think of is that the dovetail ring on yours is actually larger than what it appears to be in the...

Re: AO Spencer cardioid oil Darkfield Condenser
Fan, If the condenser you show in the photos is the actual condenser, I think you will find that it will not fit the microscope models you list. The one for those models has a notch in the dovetail ring and a different size dovetail. This one looks like those made for the older Spencer scopes such a...

Re: Floaters
As a general rule floaters are in the eyes themselves. Using a binocular microscope will minimize them. Also, use a scope that has its eyetubes inclined toward you at an angle so that you don't have to look straight down or lean over it - or tilt the scope; most binoculars have inclined tubes these ...

Re: First real microscope
One thing that could be nice to have are eyepieces with longer eye relief and rubber cups. Do they exist for microscopes? Oh yes, indeed, they exist. Most manufacturers make, or have made, eyepieces with high eyepoints for people who wear glasses. And modern oculars are either available with cups, ...

I have never used a binocular microscope before and it took some practice. But, when I got the hang of it started to feel like I am looking at a huge image floating in the air in front of me. Re: What to do with an old micrometer?
Ahem. Back to topic, I would think that straight razors would be the better bet for microtome work by virtue of the longer blade, and learning to strop blades is a whole lot easier than learning to sharpen a knife on a whet stone. And learning to sharpen any blade using any method is lots easier wh...

Re: What to do with an old micrometer?
Very good ... now go to the grocery or drug store and buy some old fashioned doubled-edged "safety razors", which, believe it or not, are still commonly available (would anybody really shave with those diabolical things in today's world?). Carefully fold one in half lengthwise, and it'll snap in tw...

I appreciate your considerateness, Phil. Yes, the 60x apo is the one I was primarily interested in, too, and the Spencer fluorite. I think I've only ever seen one other Spencer 60x apo with a correction collar before - about two years ago - but I didn't bid on it. The 10x apo will be surplus to my n...

Sorry, Phil, but they're already gone. I plan to keep the two Spencer apos and the Spencer fluorit...

Well, Rod, you know microscopes and their lenses do get dirty. It's always helpful to have a clean replacement already on hand when one discards the dirty one.
