Re: An Upgrade
With the 40:1 objectives the front lens is most often the problem. In working position it is so close to the slide that it easily gets dipped in mountants or immersion oil or even get scratched. The blue filter also cuts IR light that is not good for the eyes. Thanks for that info Bob, I'll give th...

Re: Nikon Stereo Microscope SZM-????
A nice Japanese scope. I'm a fan of such, though I don't have a stereo one. No room really :D As for different eyepieces, I would do your research before buying anything that wasn't standard issue on the microscope. I bought an upgrade widefield pair of olympus eyepieces for an old olympus ECE biolo...

Very good image, I am quite fond of moss, I once collected it to give a grassy landscape look to small bonsai plants. Your post has made me curious as to what flower petals look like at the microscopic level too.

That's quite a jump in DOF between 40x and 20x, the two objectives I use the most, and explains why my view at the higher power is diminished in terms of focus. Thanks for the tips on adding and removing water.

Evolution turned this ant into a living drill
Bods in Paris combined x-ray microtomography and high-powered microscopes to visualize the ants’ skeletomuscular system, focusing on the anatomy of the head, jaws, and legs.

Plan 40x/0.65, DIC, 180µm, Pinned by cover slip. When you say 'pinned' 75, do you imply you squeezed the slip down to sort of immobilize the copepod? I washed some slides last week and there must have been a residue of detergent left on them because the water sample spread very thin even before I p...

This also depends on how well you are able to do checking, maintenance, repairs and hunting down missing parts on the used market. Yes, this is am important caveat, the buyer of an older second hand scope should be very sure it needs no maintenance or repairs or they had better have some hands on s...

Re: How to recognize a phase contrast microscope?
Could you please tell me what "PL" stands for that shows the objectives are phase contrast? Have a look at this article Reza, it has an interactive unit near the top of the page that will allow you to see what a specimen looks like in Bright-field, Positive, and Negative phase imagery. I find Phase...

Re: Old brand microscope vs new less famous brand microscope
I would personally recommend the older scopes, but not too old, 1985-2000 as a ballpark reference say. The very modern scopes, even brand name ones like an Olympus I bought and sent back can suffer from cheap materials and design. Things like wobbly stage controls and tinny metal or cheap cast compo...

Intricate. It looks like a kaleidoscope. I know sea salt has a variety of different minerals dissolved in it and I wonder what would form when it was allowed to crystallize.

I decided to move on from the old Olympus ECE, which has served me well, but is, bluntly, a bit outdated in the optics. I snagged a later model CH-2 off feeBay which has a lot more contrast with its ED glass and better lighting too. I spent a an hour last night investigating a rusty 12mm spanner, qu...

Lots of diversity alright. When you say "clean" do you mean you will isolate the diatoms from all that extraneous matter on the slide, or are you going to conduct that complex procedure involving acids?

I tried some plastic petri dishes on my upright and found the results very ordinary. Luckily I had bought some second hand glass ones and was able to employ them, to good effect. I have a few beakers, an old German graduated cylinder, and other assorted glass. I Absolutely love glass.

Darkfield Success
I finally discovered how to get my el-cheapo darkfield disks to work on my Oly ECE upright. I had to open the field diaphragm fully and the condenser iris fully, then raise the condenser. The field diaphragm was what I had missed in my first efforts. There is a bit of flare due to the camera being h...

Re: A Question About Bulbs.
For some fiber optic lamps (Dolan Jenner for example) collimating lenses are available (push-on type) that enable to modify the light beam. lol, I wondered what that little lens attached to the end of one of the coily pipes was, it seemed useless for what I wanted to do as it only widened the beam....

Re: A Question About Bulbs.
an important tip to avoid shortening bulb life (both incandescent and halogen) is to avoid turning them on and off at high voltage. It is advisable to dim down before turning a bulb off and slowly increase the voltage when turning a bulb on. Good tip. I was just experimenting with that very practic...

Unfortunately the Olympus has no such provision, though I did receive 2 batteries with it and their lifespan seems quite adequate.Hobbyst46 wrote: Incidentally, instead of a spare battery, I use a Canon compatible AC adapter
