How do you keep track of image metadata?

I've never been a terribly well organized person. However, I recognize the need for having some sort of system for recording some metadata about my images. During an imaging session, I will scan at low power, see something interesting and grab an image. Then I might move to medium power, and snap a ...

Does anyone know how accurate the taxonomy is? Have there been major revisions in the Rotifera classifications since this was written?

These were taken in bright field with a 25x achromatic objective. They were further cropped to around 70% of their original width/height.

Coleps

A bunch of Coleps just materialized in my desktop pond/aquarium. Hard guys to get a good image of. Some methyl cellulose slowed them down enough to try. Anyone know what the pair is doing. Are they locked in a death match or are they conjugating? I saw several such pairs as I was scanning the slide....

Bruce, Thanks for the probable confirmation of Trachelophyllum. I will echo JimT's appreciation of your knowledge and willingness to help. JimT, This was taken using oblique lighting, created by rotating my phase contrast condenser ring slightly out of skew. Just happened to get a shot where the who...

Re: Copepod stacked

I pipetted him out of the tank and placed him in a small watch glass. I then added a few drops of Butacain Sulfate, a local anesthetic. This either really mellowed him out or killed him outright, not really sure. I then moved him to a slide and placed the cover slip. The fact that he ended up so wel...

The plural of the derogatory term "spaz", which is short for spastic. Basically they flail around a lot.

Copepod stacked

I've started using some new image editing software called "Affinity Photo". It has built-in focus stacking which seems to work pretty well. Here's a picture of a copepod I found in my creek water aquarium. This is a stack of 12 images. Background was erased for more punch.

Re: Aquarium's water friends :-)

Your first picture is rotifer of some kind. Phylum Rotaria. The tail at the back is not a stinger but a means to attach to the substrate.

The last two pictures are some sort of flatworm (like Planeria). Phylum Platyhelmenthes; Class Turbellaria.

Re: Can your camera see as much as your eye?

A camera can never match what you see though the eyepieces So why is that? With normal photography out in the real world, I think cameras can capture as much or more than we see with out eyes. Is it the "depth of field" problem? you may want to look through the eyepieces every now and again to test...

Re: Looking for Periplan 10x high eyepoint eyepiece

Pete, I'm only slowly getting an understanding of all the designations on an eyepiece. I think that "M" means it is focusable. I don't know if that is good or bad for photographic use. However, I'm looking for the high eye point version, designed for people that wear glasses. It should have an eyegl...

Can your camera see as much as your eye?

I'm still pretty new at imaging through a microscope. I've gone from: 1. Afocal imaging with an iPhone, to 2. Direct objective projection onto the sensor, to 3. Eyepiece projection onto the sensor, to 4. Afocal imaging with a Canon 700D and a 40mm lens. The last option was suggested to me by some pe...

Re: Good sites other than eBay?

Zzffnn, I've seen that one. The description says it is for a 160mm tube length and I need 170. However, I've been told that the newer 160 eyepieces have the field number engraved after the magnification. These don't so I'm not sure if he is correct about the 160. In addition I've been told on the Ph...

Good sites other than eBay?

I've been trying to find a Leitz Periplan 10x high eye point eyepiece for afocal photography. eBay hasn't had anything for the past 10 days.

Has anyone found other good surplus sites where I might start looking?

Re: Filter holder for oblique illumination

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try to rig something up and see how it goes. In the meantime I was able to do a poor mans oblique lighting by rotating the turret of my phase condenser so it was between stops. It was not perfect by any means but I was able to get this pretty cool picture of a Stentor. Sen...

Filter holder for oblique illumination

My Leitz condenser doesn't have a filter holder. Has anyone come up with a clever "do it yourself" method for holding filters under the condenser? Alternatively, if anyone knows of a Leitz add-on filter holder for the 402a condenser, I'd like to hear about it.

Looking for Periplan 10x high eyepoint eyepiece

I'm looking for a Periplan 10x high eye point eyepiece. This is for an older Leitz 170mm tube length scope. My understanding is that Periplans for the 170mm do not have the field number engraved on them.

Any guess if it would work in a 170?...

Photo Extension Tube

I've come to realize (I think) that my camera setup leaves something to be desired. I'm using a simple direct projection adapter that hooks the DSLR to the top photo tube and lets the objective directly project onto the sensor. This works reasonably well but normally the Leitz Periplan eyepieces cor...

Re: "Ensure a lens is attached"

So I did get this problem worked out. It turns out you can start a video recording despite the warning. You have to push the "record" button twice. I did try this the other night but apparently having my camera hooked up to my tethering software was what was preventing the recording. All is good now.
