Re: 10x only or not?

I would guess that the lower depth of field of the 40x objective caused you to have focusing problems. It might (as a matter of fact) have been in focus, but because of the lower depth of field areas above and below the focus plane might have interfered, and therefore given you a subjective impressi...

Hello, and mounted with transformer varnish what is transformer varnish? Is it the "paint" that holds the coil of a transformer in place? If so, where did you get it and is there any shrinkage when drying? Is it dissolvable in alcohol? I am asking, because I am looking for a cheap, safe and fast dry...

Re: Culture media

Hello, Hay infusions are sometimes used to culture paramecia and other microorganisms, but the problem is that they also promote rapid bacterial growth. The bacteria (while needed as a food source) may soon overgrow the Paramecia and reduce the oxygen content of the water (causing everything to die ...

Hello and welcome to the forum. It looks like a "test" of a testate amoeba. Tests are the shells. As a matter of fact, it is not only the empty shell, but you can also see the pseudopods extending from it, so it is alive. The pseudopods are the clear jelly-like extensions from the test. Here are som...

Re: Monocular vs Binocular/Trinocular imaging question

If you want to do much photography, then the convenience (in my opinion) of a trinocular outweighs many other considerations. If you want to capture fast moving organisms, then light plays a much more important role, but if you observe static specimens, then it really does not matter if your exposur...

Other sites suggested that it might also be worth trying to clear your browser cookies (history). This forces the forum to reset the cookies which it needs for timing.

Re: Power Standarization questions

Increasing optical zoom increass the amount of incoming light, giving a cleaar image Well, actually increasing the zoom decreases the light, because you are looking at a smaller part of the specimen. The light of this "small part" is then magnified, hence spread out over a larger area. This reduces...

Re: defective 5x DIN?

1. Could it be that the focus lock lever of your microscope (if it has one) prevents the full focussing? it can be found next to one of the coarse focus knobs. 2. Some microscopes allow for the adjustment of the focus travel with a screw. this is to prevent the stage from crashing into the objective...

The stacking of red blood cells that you refer to is called rouleaux formation. There a Wikipedia article on it:

The tool with the knobs is called a micromanipulator. It is used to remove the nucelus of cells and can be used to inject sperm cells into egg cells when doing In-Vitro fertilization (ivf). Dissecting a Paramecium does not result in more information. The contents is fluid and therefore any disturban...

Re: Leitz power unit/bulb troubleshoot

Hello,
Check the voltage directly at the two "feet" (wires) of the bulb, with the bulb still connected. Maybe there is a problem with the socket to bulb connection due to corrosion. The picture shows that the bulb wires seem to be discolored at the bottom, which could indicate corrosion.

Re: xylol - xylene?

Hello, be careful when using xylene /xylol for cleaning. These solvents might dissolve the kit which glues the lenses into place in the objective. You should use a highly volatile solvent (30 ethanol:70 ether mixture), which evaporates quickly and one which can not seep much behind the lenses. This ...

Hello, The microscopes in your link are all somewhat different and they can not be compared directly. Ultimately it boils down to the simple formula: The best...

UV objectives are made of a material which allows UV light to go through (sample illuminated with UV from top, with the UV light passed th...
