Re: Oil Immersion Objectives
Yes, the article I reference to on Nikon U mentions correction collars for coverslips in immersion objects, which also states they are expensive as is that $7000 objective.

I think you're right Gekko! Correction collars on non-immersion objectives and not immersion objectives.

Re: Oil Immersion Objectives
It is primarily do to differences in cover slip thickness. Not all coverslips are the same thickness and the higher the NA of an objective, the more sensitive it is to coverslip thickness and the correction collar corrects for that.

Re: Servicing a Zeiss Binocular Head - Type Jentsch
I wouldn't hit with anything either. That is the same style as the white ones, so it should just pull apart. It is a tight fit so you may need to wiggle it some. Haven't seen a screw in lens with the C. Sometimes you find a polarizing (analyzer) lense screwed in there but it would normally have some...

The easiest solution is to loosen the whatever secures the condenser and turn your condenser until it's in a position to use.

Re: Servicing a Zeiss Binocular Head - Type Jentsch
I don't have a service manual but it's quite easy. If this is the Zeiss head you are referring to, there are three screws on the bottom which holds the unit together. Remove the three screws and pull it apart and you have access to all the prisms. Make sure your work area is clean. Zeiss Binoc Head ...

Still figuring how to incorporate all the bits. So here is video I have of of a thin section meteorite using the trinocular and 12.5X wide field and a web cam. Re: Zeiss Standard gets a new home
If you need to remove the rotating stage, you just remove the top portion by doing the same thing you do to remove the condenser from the condenser carrier, but this time you Will need to loosen the two centering screws in the back on either side. Then pull the stage towards you against the front sp...

You guys DIDNT tell me the illuminator BULB had to be adjusted!! That helped more than even Kohler. Re: 15x expensive?
The optivar was standard on Zeiss large research stands like the Ultraphots, Universals and Photomicroscopes when they came out in the late 50s I believe. It also was an optional intermediate piece in the GFL, WL and Standards both black and grey stands.

Re: Nye Hobby Kit - Great Price
No problem Kurt!
I realize a lot of folks aren't really into tearing apart various microscopes and don't need but an amount to use for only their one or two scopes, so this isn't really appealing, but for people who do, it's a nice deal.

Re: 15x expensive?
The solution to this , decided on by many companies was to make 6 and even in some cases 7 port nosepieces. Ultimately, it makes life a lot easier. You are, of course right-- I was lucky to snag 6-port nosepieces for my microscope which made life more pleasant. But in this case I think the real pro...

Nye Hobby Kit - Great Price
I have cleaned and lubed a lot of microscopes the last few years and have always used the Nye Hobby Kit for all my grease and oil needs. This is a great synthetic grease and oil which does not dry up like most other greases. With all the scopes I have serviced with my initial purchase about three ye...

Or if you think the objectives still are not centering properly and need to be cleaned up, and you are brave enough, here is a link to how to disassemble, clean and reassemble the old type of Zeiss Pol objectives:

Re: Actually cleaning the microscope
As an aside to Apo's cleaning technique which is probably very good for many makes of objectives, but for older Zeiss objectives, Zeiss does not recommend using alcohol to clean their objectives. They state it will attack the cements in them although for the newer objectives it should be okay. Only ...

I'll echo what Gekko says. I use bulb air and lens brush first. I also use Zeiss lens cleaning fluids and texwipes.
Ebay has good prices on Zeiss lens cleaning fluid and texwipes.

Re: Zeiss Standard gets a new home
Standard 18 with the modern trinocular head. Nice! What is the function of the "L" shaped plates? It came with a DIC condenser and was probably originally set up for DIC. The 'L' piece elevates the focus mechanism about 8mm so the stage can be lowered by 8mm more which is to accommodate the 8mm tak...

Re: olympus sz3060 dioptre mechanism
There are two methods. In some like the Zeiss, they have three set screws around the circumference which keep the diopter ring in place. In others there is one central screw which attaches to a plate.

Re: olympus sz3060 dioptre mechanism
Most scopes only have diopter settings on one eyetube. The way to set it up is to focus on a specimen only using the eyepiece with out the diopter settings and the fine focus. Once you have that focused, look through the eyepiece with the diopter setting and turn it (the diopter ring) until that eye...

Re: AO Spencer 15 with Pol
Thank you Gekko! I got this scope yesterday and was pleasently surprised at what I have. It appears to be an AO Interference microscope. The only problem is that it doesn't have it's various interference condensers as shown here for a Baker Interence here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AO-Cooke-C-Baker-In...

Yes, I remember now there was that pin. Those are talen lenses to keep the system at the right 160mm TL. I have never tried to put two intermediate pieces on my scopes but I think 75RR put two intermediate pieces on his Zeis RA, an optivar and a two head cube, and he had to mount it in that configur...

Have you tried reversing the order. Pol intermediate piece with top lens removed and the optivar on top with the bottom lens removed. These weren't really designed to stack one intermediate piece ontop of another.

BTW, The optivar looks loose in the picture. The optivar is connected by four set screws under a surface plug. The left side looks like it needs to be pushed up and the set screw tightened.
