Re: Leitz 600 series condenser lens orientation

Usually it's the last two or three leaves which are difficult to slide into place. After you have done a couple, it's not that difficult. My way is to lay the leaves in while it is in the open position. The last three, need to be slid under the ones already in place and getting the ends to drop into...

The simplest way is use a plastic bag. After finishing using the microscope, put it in the bag, evacuate all or as much of the air possible, put in your silica and then seal the bag.

Try holding a piece of paper under the lens and raise and lower it, until you see it come in focus. That will give you an estimate of what height you will need.

Re: What is this Zeiss part and to which system does it belong ?

Hi Doron, That optovar can attach to the GFL as well as all the Standards 14-WL as well as the inverted. The PH setting is the bertrand lens. Some optovars even have and analyzer which can be flipped in and out of the light train. The ones with the analyzer has a small lever in the back. Here are pi...

Re: How to use x40 objectives?

You should first ensure the optical/light train is aligned..Kohler or critical illumination has been setup. If all of the objectives are the same make/brand, they should be parfocal. If they are parfocal, you should use your 10X objective to focus on a specimen and then rotate the 40x into view and ...

Re: Is diatomaceous earth a good source for diatoms?

Most Diatomaceous earth has been processed by acid cleaning, heating and grinding to uniform size and most have non-diatomaceous earth fillers added. So different brands will differ with how much diatoms are in there. When there are diatoms in the sample, most are broken. I have a DE pool filter and...

The first option, although more expensive, is the best since you can adjust the tube to be parfocal. Both come up on ebay now and then.

Re: The easiest microscope to tweak, modify

Next might be the Zeiss line, especially in Europe as noted above. The "Standard" model stands are mechanically reliable, but it's hard to find stands (the Zeiss WL, Standard 18 , etc.) with the removable nosepiece option -- and even harder to find affordable spare nosepieces. A six hole turret rec...

Most Zeiss stages will fit your Zeiss Universal/Photomicroscope stand. The main thing is you need the stage holder which clips onto your focus block. I am not familiar with Nikon microscope systems but everyone seems to be calling this a epi DIC system, but it has a DIC condenser for transmitted light and a separate transmitted light phase condenser. So is this both epi and transmitted DIC?

I will have to break it out of storage and take a look at the stage. The stage did come with the scope is specific for the inverted and probably does have different structure to allow for the objective clearance. The extenders are DIC holders with DIC slides.

The Black WL is decently priced for what it has on it. Rotating stage runs about $150-200, each of the Phase Neofluars run about $100-150, the Phase condenser with 1-2-3 phase and darkfield would run about $200, the rest of the stand with focus block, lighting, binocular head with eyepieces another ...

On that note, are there reputable used microscope dealers out there that take some of the risk out of the equation for a newbie...

Re: Carl Zeiss Jena Nr. 154618 help!

Great you got the proper model and date. I get my Zeiss information from a book by Lawrence Gubas. He had a picture of the A stand but did not have the B stand. In the book he states they are very similar but the B is bigger than the A. So I took the serial number for the A stand which shows 1924. T...
