Re: Foraminifera Pix

Amazingly, the shape of tests of these little guys remind strongly of that of normal sized sea shells as made by molluscs, a wholly unrelated phylum of animals! Nature seems to rediscover the same patterns repeatedly.

Re: Look at this guy

If that's the silhouette of a standard sized needle in the picture, the critter is quite large, and I'd venture that the magnification is closer to 10x.

I think they may have had an argument of some kind because they are all facing away from each other.

Re: Skinbugs

Thank you all! :) Re my assertion thet the bacteria in the second pic were Gram +; I think I jumped to conclusions too soon. After some more reading, it looks like I missed out on an all important rinsing step with acetone. Only if, after the rinse, the bacteria still retain their purple colour, are...

Skinbugs

I casted a few agar plates (2% agar, 1% glucose, 5% beef extract) to investigate the microflora found on my skin. I inoculated the petri dishes by simply touching it with my fingers. Dishes were incubated in a dark drawer at room temperature. Growth was rapid and just a little bit horrifying. Below ...

I'll bet it's an Echinoderm ... possibly a baby brittlestar. It looks a bit damaged, though. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittle_star From the Wikipedia article: They can easily thrive in marine tanks; in fact, the micro brittle star is a common "hitchhiker" that will propagate and become common i...

Re: USB digital microscope

Greetings Luis, and welcome here. In short, I seriously doubt that the microscope that you linked to will be able to resolve bacteria. Firstly, I am sceptical about a 1000x magnification claim in this type of microscope. In my experience these handheld USB types give good workable results up to mayb...

Something for the mantelpiece

I found this stereo microscope at a flea market yesterday, and at ZAR225 (about US$18) I couldn't resist. It's really quite a small thing, and it came with 15x and 50x oculars. I expect the latter will be quite useless, but will test them out properly later. Its four prisms (if that's indeed what th...
