Re: eyepiece camera vs phone

Don, turn the phone horizontally if you crop in the phone, and the vertical format becomes horizontal. If you're shooting stills you can crop any way you want, horizontal, vertical, or rotated in some weird way to match specimen orientation (see the demo foraminifera shot cropped in Lightroom in the...

Re: eyepiece camera vs phone

Cell phone cameras work just fine. If you're careful, and practice a bit, you can do very well hand-held. I've shot publication quality stills hand-held. You can do much, much better with a cell phone mount of some kind, even shooting very nice 4K or 8K video, if your phone will support it. I person...

Re: Ebay microscope sales scam. Anyone know the details?

Talk about timing, here's the number of the fraudulent IX70 Ebay sale: 133704755178 I've reported this particular one, with other numbers I'm sure, several times. Just for sport, I'll refrain from reporting it for awhile so anyone can see what's going on, although his other item list come up as miss...

Re: Ebay microscope sales scam. Anyone know the details?

I've seen a bunch of those over the last several months. IX-70/71 with a starting bid of $32 last time, or other absurd prices. They swipe listing pictures from legit listings, and sometimes copy the other data as well. Somewhere in the listing is often a photo of their "Buy it Now" really low price...

That was done using an Olympus BHS, SPlan objectives and DIC. Video shot in 4K UHD using a Panasonic GH4.

You might find this (long) video explanation, by Peter Evennett (Royal Microscopical Society and Quekett Microscopical Club) , of how microscope optics work useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60_jgZtyR6U It answers a lot of questions and I really wish I'd had it as a reference when I was first ...

Re: Counting chambers

It doesn't change anything. It's just a thick glass base designed to be washed and reused many, many times. For years if you're careful. The distance to the floor of the counting chamber from the top of the cover slip is well within the working distance of regular 40x objectives. That is what they w...

Re: Counting chambers

It's called a Hemocytometer. They provide a flat, gridded and highly accurate counting volume. Before automated RBC, WBC, and platelet cell counters these are what was used to perform the counts in clinical labs. Lots of sperm counts and body fluid (pleural, peritoneal and CSF) cell counts are still...

MichaelG, That's indicating the "slow wave" axis for the waveplate. Slow waves and fast waves are properties of polarized light. You're going to find those interesting to play with. The sensitive tint should be a full wave (AKA first order) retarder, the quarter wave (lambda) retarder is just that, ...

I'm a retired Clinical Lab Scientist with a degree in clinical microbiology. I was a lab supervisor for 25 years. SB County Hospital, renamed Arrowhead Regional Medical Center when we moved to a new campus in 1999, was, and probably still is, the second busiest trauma center in California. As a resu...

Re: Stool Microscopy - Parasite DD - Artifacts?

Diagnostic parasitology isn't something you can learn quickly or easily. It takes good training, a lot of time at the microscope, and a whole lot of specimens, positive and negative, to even get adequate, so don't feel bad.

It's been quite awhile since I did any diagnostic parasitology, but I think they were correct in not treating. The fact that you were left alone with the specimen should probably tell you something. I've no idea what the first two are, but they really don't look like eggs, or anything important to m...

Aeolosoma hemprichi is very easy to keep in culture too. I kept some going for three years in a deep petri dish. Just feed them a little piece of spinach leaf once a week or so, and change the water when there gets to be too much debris left over. I've seen as many as four of them hooked together no...

Which Sony? Find out what part of the sensor is being used for the video resolution you intend to shoot. If it shoots video using the full frame at that resolution, your good with the NFK 2.5x. If it's smaller than full frame, you'll either need to accept the crop factor or come up with another solu...

Re: Monochromatic Microscopes?

Color provides contrast among other things. Without color, you will need to find some other way to increase contrast enough to tell one thing from the other. It also provides more specific clues as to what you are looking at by way of differential staining. Think of the difficulty in distinguishing ...

Re: Olympus eyepiece markings?

The + inside a circle should mean there is a crosshair reticle in place. These are mostly used on polarizing microscopes and generally cost somewhat more than an eyepiece without the reticle as they are relatively rare. They are also handy if you are trying to collimate the eyepieces in a binocular ...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

The bottom line is that you need an image circle at the sensor that is large enough to enclose the entire area of the sensor that is used to capture the image. If it's smaller, you get vignetting. You really have very few reasonable choices as to how to get there. You are limited to the available pr...

A mag changer can help with photographic framing. You can actually do the same thing with different projection eyepiece magnifications too. I originally got one to help with framing specimens for outreach demonstrations, so the kids didn't have to search so much for what I was trying to show them. A...

I think using a calibration slide is the only way to get accurate dimensional information for scale bars. Basically, Photograph the calibration slide with the objectives you intend to use (or all of them to be complete) with the same camera and projection setup you will use with the specimens. If yo...
