Welcome to the new forum!

Announcement
Due to the large number of spam registrations, please (1) sign up and then (2) email me, telling me that you registered, and requesting to be unlocked. I will then unlock your account. This way, I want to make sure that you are a "real" human and not a spambot. Why this procedure? During the registration process, I am asking you to answer some questions and also to type in a justification. But AI is also able to do this now.

Forum Rules!
1. No bad language. Posts that contain bad language will be deleted without warning.
2. No personal attacks of any kind.
3. No criticism of products that you are not satisfied with. This is for legal protection.
4. No plagiarism of any kind. This includes the upload of images that you do not own.
5. No posts that are not microscopy-related.
6. Keep image size appropriate. Crop away parts that are not relevant.
7. If possible use an external image hosting site and then link the image to save server space (which is limited per user anyway).
8. No posts with the only intent of advertising. Sometimes links are to products are useful for microscopy. In this case I will make a decision.
9. Search the forum first for answers to your questions before you post a question.

Personal attacks, insults, expletives etc.
Please report posts that are offending. Any member who posts personal attacks and/or insults directed to another forum member or someone who uses bad language can and will be blocked/removed without warning. The offending posts will also be removed. It is possible not display the posts of certain other users. Click on the offending member's name to view the profile. There click on the link "add foe" to not display the posts of this member. Do not provoke other members and do not respond to offending posts as this will simply increase the spiraling. I will also remove posts that respond. Should members receive abusive Personal Messages (PMs), then please also inform the forum admin. I will block/remove the user as well. The forum is about microscopy not about personal feuds. The administrator will decide if the violation justifies a removal from the forum.

Spam posts
Please report spam posts, I will remove them and the member that posted them. Some posts might be considered "useful advertising", where a member promotes a microscopy-related product. Once other users have responded to such a post in a useful way, it will be difficult/impossible for me to remove this post without breaking the thread.

Accessing the site
There are two Web addresses that you can use, and both lead to this very forum:
1. http://www.microscopy-forum.com
2. http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum

Registering
The procedure for registering is very straight forward:
1. Click the "Register" link in the top left corner.
2. Agree to the Terms and Conditions
3. Fill in username, password and email
4. Type in the code
5. Confirm by clicking the link in the email.
6. You have to type the answer to a question as an anti-spam measure.
7. Important: I will have to manually approve.

Inserting pictures
There are two ways of making pictures visible inside one post.
1. You can upload a picture to an external image hosting service (Photobucket, Flickr, etc.) and then include the link to the picture inside the post. Copy paste the complete link (including the beginning http://) and then surround the link with the Image tags. This is the preferred method. You have a lot of storage space available, because the forum itself does not have to host the pictures. Image size is also not limited and you can include as many images per post as you want. These external servers are also large and fast and can handle much data more efficiently. Note, that DropBox does not allow for direct image embedding anymore! If you want to embed images from Photobucket, then copy the link listed in the "Direct" box and place it between the Image tags.

for Flickr, go to share and copy paste the BBCode into the forum

2. You can upload pictures to the forum. Below the edit box there is the option to upload attachments. Select the picture that you want to upload ("choose file") and then upload it. you can also add a caption to each image. There is a limit to 5 pictures per post, each picture can not be larger than 512KB and can not be larger than 1024x1024. Larger images take much loading time and can not be displayed properly inside the available space. If these size requirement are not met, then it will not upload. There is also a maximum storage space allocated to each user. These restrictions are necessary, otherwise there is not enough server space available. I might have to adjust these values, however. This is not the most flexible method if you want to present many pictures. It is really important, that you do not upload pictures which you did not make yourself (copyright issue). To manage your files, you have to visit the User Control Panel (UCP) on the top right corner. After the upload, select the picture from the dropdown list below the edit box and click "Place inline".

Inserting Youtube videos
Directly copy-pasting the youtube link into the edit box will not display the video (it will only show a link to the video, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XROxpVE5rEg). This is for security reasons. If you want to embed a video, so that it actually shows up, then you must follow the following steps:

It is different and takes a bit of getting used to, but message and profile management is easier.
The Preview and Notify options have long been a desired feature
AND
there does not appear to be a "no posts accepted" from 18:00-20:00 hrs GMT-5.

Question:
The forum indicates messages can be deleted. By whom and when? Only the author, only the Admin or both.

Thank you Mr. Kim.

What is this? You seem to know something that I do not know. When did this message appear? I did not configure the forum not to accept posts (there would have been no reason for this).

In any case, I am going to write a short tutorial on the new forum, I myself am also now just starting to get an overview of the features. Concerning the editing and deleting of posts, the admin can always delete posts (for removing spam) and also the author has this possibility, but only for a certain time.

Mr Kim:

The reference to "No posts during 16-18 hrs" was to the "old" forum.
You could log in, create a post or reply, but the post was placed in the bit bucket, not the forum.
This no post issue had been mentioned by other users.

Your current forum software does not have that issue.

I fell victim to this issue several times. I'm glad it is no longer a problem. It was very frustrating composing a post or replying to a post only to have it forever go away after hitting the send button.

I constantly get script errors now, but it's not the forums fault. I've had this problem for quite some time now on other forums. Now I need to fix my 'puter or compose all my posts with a word processor. Every key press gives me an error.

Your best bet is to post this in an appropriate sub-forum. It looks to be an old toolmaker's microscope - equipped for micro-hardness testing. Maybe Leitz? Markings on the eyepieces or objectives might lead you to a maker. Just a country of origin could narrow it down.

Looks like a Titan TM of TM II toolmaker's microscope. Maybe.

Hello everyone,
I'm retired Maxillo-facial surgeon who through re-reading Biology and thanks to the huge scientific advancement in many scientific fields in including illustration, has become fascinated by Biolobgy. I'm planning to build up my gear. I'm quite pleased to find that site. My respect to Oliver and thanks for your passion and dedication.

This message is for Oliver:
Wonderful web site, great posts.
I watched Oliver's Youtube video about microscopic observation of insects. Insects happen to be my favorite topic of observation and I really enjoy mounting and preserving whole or part insects. In my opinion the best way to observe the structures of insects is to use a low power stereo microscope at 10x and no more than 20x. Higher magnifications get into the area of very limited depth of field and really do not help the overall observation.
One method of observation that I came across accidentally is to insert the whole insect into 70% alcohol. Because of the low surface tension and clarity of 70% alcohol, the small insect "suspends" in the medium in an almost natural position. I find this method to be particulary good for small insects like tiny flies and mosquitoes where the wings are extended. It also seems, as Oliver explained, that the medium of 70% alcohol diffuses the lighting and gives a far better view than a dry mount observation.

I did have a question regarding a bleaching solution for dark colored chitinous insects. My original preparation of 5-10% Potassium Hydroxide was unsuccessful in bleaching some very dark colored chitious beetles. At the present time, I use a saturated solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and bleaching times vary depending on the insects. My question to Oliver would be to tell us how to prepare a 5-10% KOH solution, i.e. by weight, by volume.

Regarding some very dark beetles that I tried to bleach, the immersion process was so long that the corrosive nature of the KOH degraded to chitinous exoskeleton without bleaching it for preferred viewing. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Antoni

Hello everybody,
I inherited a microscope from my sister 6 years ago and this spring I was ready to sell it on E-bay, but while I was trying to figure out how much it is worth, I kept digging and digging in the world of microscopes and eventually ended up viewing many, excellent educational videos made by Oliver. As a result, I had a change of heart and decided to keep the microscope (see specs below, in my signature) and start learning more stuff about this subject.

I have found great information here, so I decided to register. I am a semi-retired radiologist so most of my imaging work is with macroscopic anatomy. However, I have an interest in optics, so I have microscopes, telescopes, and surveying instruments. Microscopy is a “hobby”, but I enjoy exploring the microscopic world. When I went to medical school rather than just rent a microscope as most of my fellow students did, I opted to purchase one. I had used Nikon cameras for years, so I looked at the then-current Nikon line and purchased a Nikon S-Ke with an optional five-place objective turret. I kept it and still have it. Nikon offered a “lifetime” warranty in those days so when the plastic fine focus gear split, Nikon repaired it at no cost. I still have that microscope, but have added a few others: An Orthoplan, an Olympus BH2-BHS, and a “big” Nikon - an Eclipse E800. eBay has been a good source for me and I purchased a Nikon L-Ke stand years ago that had the nylon gear replaced with a metal one. I moved the parts from my S-Ke to it and have added many S and L series accessories. I also have an Aristoplan that I am working on and a couple of Zeiss stands that are in the same category (not usable at present).

I have some current questions and will post them in the most applicable sections. Glad to now be a registered user!

Hello, I just purchased an American Optical 110 with infinity objectives and came across this site while researching anything and everything microscopy. Can anyone recommend a good pair of eyepieces? Do I have to consider the infinity objectives or will standard EPs work ok? Thanks so much.

Hello,
A new thread will likely get better results for you; that said, the AO 110 usually shipped with 10x Cat 180 eyepieces, but the 10x Cat 176 from the AO10 will also work at a slightly reduced field number(width of view).
If you make a new thread, we love pictures and it would be interesting to know what objectives and Cat #'s you have.

Hi, no it doesn't come with EPs. I found it on the LbaX site at such a good price I figured I'd just find EPs else where, when it arrives I'll be sure to add some pics. I'm a complete newby to microscopy but did a lot of research and the AO seemed to have the specs I was after...wide range of magnification with ahcro plans etc. Although I have to admit I'd never heard of infinity corrected objectives so that will be interesting. I live near a few nature walks and creeks so I'm looking forward to collecting some stagnant and scummy water to see what's crawling around.
