Does anyone else have this sample collecting problem?
Does anyone else have this sample collecting problem?
I have some water sources near me which look very good for taking samples from. The problem is that their embankments are too tall or too steep, it is impossible to reach the water without falling in.
Does anyone else have a similar problem? Has anyone else found a solution?

My solution is to make cultures. Take a handful of dry grass from anyplace where birds or other animals may have walked. Put the grass in a liter jar or water. Wait a day. The birds carry cysts and live organisms on their bodies and these quickly enliven in the water.

On the YT channel "Journey to the Microcosmos" they mention taking a collapsible selfie stick and attaching a small container to the end. Also, similar to the bucket and rope suggestion, they will sometimes use a plankton net with a fine mesh.

Collapsible golf ball retriever adapted to take a small plastic bottle on the golf ball end. Here I must give a plug to Tony Pattinson's excellent books "The Freshwater Microscopist" including parts 2, 3, and 4, all available from Blurb Books.

I have successfully used a long stick as a guide for a small rubber hose that has a 50ml syringe on my end. Once you select a sampling spot simply dip the stick with the hose firmly attached to it with pig tails or whatever and slowly pull the plunger on the syringe. Then discharge in your sample container.
