Numount [NBS substitute for Canada Balsam]

#1 Post by MichaelG. » Wed Aug 19, 2020 8:44 pm

I am unsure what it’s availability was outside the U.K. but Numount was a popular substitute for Canada Balsam; from Northern Biological Supplies.

It was initially well-received; but after a few years, slides prepared with it started to show characteristic crystallisation, which could be quite intrusive.

My reason for mentioning it now, is that I have just found an unused bottle of it at the back of a drawer.
... This has solidified [evaporation of Xylene] over the years; but it is beautifully clear, with not a sign of crystal formation.

Curious !

Maybe it is intolerant of adulterants present in samples.
