Our study showed that among the nine mounting methods tested, thermal inactivation of animals at 60 °C for 30 min followed by briefly pressing the coverslip with an entomological pin produced specimens fixed optimally for morphometry and imaging (i.e. maximally stretched and levelled but not deformed).

Tnx, requested the paper.

Thermal inactivation of 30 mins at 60 centigrade would suffice.... and they send them to the moon and expect them to reincarnate when returned to earth???

Thermal relaxation by incubating live individuals at 60 °C for 30 min, i.e. until dead and fully straightened, and then mounting them on slides ...
For me, at least, this gives a whole new meaning to the word ‘incubating’

And I'm still kicking myself for losing my entomological cover-slip poking pin.

Interesting. I think this is the full pdf downloadable...

The chloral hydrate puts a stop on the Hoyer's formula here in the U.K. that's for sure - an alternative must be out-there though?

Is any amount or any product containing any amount of chloral hydrate illegal? Can you order ready made Hoyer's? I use Hempsteads Hoyer's and I really like it for semi-permanent mounts. It's vert easy to use and inexpensive but of course it contains Chloral Anhydrous.

Lets see if these links work,,,

If you have a slow internet that link will be slower to load than usual for a web page, cos it contains the whole text as well, below the abstract, so save the page as an html-complete for offline browser use.)

link on that page to the PDF :

(edit) ,,, yep, looks good with me.
