Random shots from the algae jar

I'm not really sure what this is, but it's insides churn frequently, and constricting bands appear and disappear near either end periodically. Egg or cyst possibly? I have kept this slide hydrated all day, and check in on this fellow occasionally. So far he seems to be content to just sit there churning his insides.

Who can resist when Cosmarium strikes a nice pose?

I don't normally see many testate amoebae, but this slide was crawling with them. Literally. Many of them were actively crawling about using their pseudo-pods to drag themselves across the slide. Pretty cool to watch.

Nice images Eddie.

Looks like you're having fun. :)

What part of Illinois are you from? (IL is a LONG state!)

Thanks Charlie, yes, I am having a great time on my day off. Wife is working today, so I get to work uninterrupted.
We live down in the southern part of the state, about 2.5 hours drive south east of St Louis Missouri.

Nice photos, CE. Thank you for sharing.
It would be very interesting to follow up on the egg. With snail eggs, sometimes you forget to check and they all turn to snails quickly - the really interesting changes are often missed.

I watched that thing all day, and of course it hatched while I wasn't looking. But I did manage to catch this young fellow just moments after he emerged from his egg.
He is a ciliate, there are small fine cilia ringing him all round. He is very flexible, can bend nearly double when he wants, and can zip across the slide quite quickly while I try to take his photo. I have seen these before, but still don't know what they are.

I could be totally wrong, however based on his size under 20x objectives, his shape/structure and eyes, he looks like a worm to my untrained eyes. Please refer to: http://www.plingfactory.de/Science/GruK ... laria.html

Hmmm... looking at the images on that page, I would say that it's Gieysztoria cuspidata. Thanks!

Nice images and interesting post. The amoeba is particularly good and a very interesting catch on its side (they are usually "upright"). The flat worm is also excellent.
