Klaus Kemp 8 Form Test Plate

#1 Post by charlie » Sun Feb 28, 2016 1:35 am

When I mentioned that I intended to buy Klaus Kemp 8 Form Test Plate, I was asked to order additional test plates so that the international shipping cost could be shared.

http://www.diatoms.co.uk/

I emailed Klaus Kemp asking for shipping and handling fees and he responded:

Thank you for the email, the cost for the test plates is £17.50 each and carriage and packing is £4.50 for standard Air Mail or £9.50 for "To be signed for" and as the package has a high value content I would suggest the latter option, which can be tracked and more likely to arrive at your address. It does not change the cost for Postage for one or eight slides as the weight is within the same cost boundary, payment in Paypal in GBP to my email address is the preferred payment method. Kindest regards

£9.50 amounts to a bit over $13. To reship domestically, the cost for USPS first class shipping 3 ounces is $2.54 and a suitable padded envelope is needed so call it $3.50 total. Insurance is available for $2.20 additional. My idea is to place the slide(s) between 2 sheet metal pieces in a padded envelope. (Advice is welcome!) I am used to not being paid for my time so that is free. :-)

If any others would like to join in, you are welcome. (PM or respond here.) In a few days, we can see what, if any savings, a group purchase would achieve.

You can count me in. Are you getting more than one type? My interest is
for optical evaluation. Come on people, help Charlie out.

Owning a Kemp 8 Form Test is a microscopists rite of passage. Congratulations

I already have an 8 form test slide, but I will go in for one 30 form fresh/fossil/marine (25.00). :)

I am getting at least one other type since shipping adds to the cost significantly.

(I am also headed to an artesian spring this morning to get some fresh diatom samples.) :-)

Just a reminder:

Circular exhibition (and probably most exhibition) mount does not have diatom names on a separate sheet (as it is difficult to arrnahe those names the same way) and the diatoms on it may differ between each slide. You can ask for more diversity on exhibition mount, if you want (I asked, and did not see any duplication in my 100 form). If you want names, you should go for the type slide.

I have a 100 form exhibition slide but broke its cover slip  everyone who saw it was amazed.

That is sad Fan. (Thank you for the reminder.)

Do you, or anyone else, have advice to avoid that happening?

I see Glen and gekko have discussed the test slide before!

Would any of you care to post images? :-)

[Two test slides and one 30 form fresh/fossil/marine slide will be added to my order.]

Charlie,

I suggest:
1) maintaining good parfocality between your objectives.
2) when you try high NA immersion objectives (NA >=0.9) for the first time, don't try them on your exhibition slide.

In my life time so far, I have only crashed broken cover slips twice. But both times occurred on my 100 form exhibition slide  :o

Our order from Klaus Kemp has arrived! :-)

Will you each kindly send me your address in a pm?

There is a potential problem though. The 8 form test plates are different.
I assume Klaus did this purposely but if neither of you want the second type, I will have to make arrangements to get a replacement.

The Klaus Kemp 8 Form Test Plates for testing objectives contain the following species:

Amphipleura pellucida
Frustulia rhomboides
Pleurosigma angulatum
Surirella gemma
Nitzschia sigma
Stauroneis phoenicentron
Navicula lyra
Gyrosigma balticum

Or

G. balticum
N. lyra
S. phoenicenteron
N. sigma
S. gemma
P. angulatum
F. rhomboides
A. pellucida

Charlie,
Those two slides contain the same diatoms. Just one slide was labeled in shorthand form.
For example:
Amphipleura pellucida = A. pellucida

lol

It is sillier that that Fan! I took the first list from Klaus' website. Both slides are labeled in shorthand;
I just failed to notice that the same diatoms were listed but in a different order.
