I received my new Wild M20 Epi with Interference today. Don't ask me what the interference does because it's new to me. I think it has to do with metallurgical studies. The interference unit came with an Epi 10X which screws into the single objective nose piece. Each of the knobs on the side is associated with a percentage of interference, 4%, 30%, 60% and 90% with click stops also in between and each knob adjust an internal mirror.

The scope comes with a trinocular port with a 2X photo eyepiece, two 10X wide field eyepieces, Epi unit which has bright field and darkfield positions, a rotatling Pol analyzer and working lamp.

Cleaned it up and here it is:

Overall it's in surprising good shape.

Now to learn what the interference does.

I can see why they said Nikon model S is a clone of the Wild, they look highly similar. Does the fine focus on the Wild work perfectly? The Nikon S' major flaw is its fine focus prone to breaking.

A very nice and I suspect, still quite useful instrument. Wild , along with Bausch & Lomb, Cooke-Baker/Vickers and Spencer/American Optical is one of the relatively unheralded stars of what might be called , the old school microscope community. Leitz, managing to thrive today, branded with Leica camera fame , and in most peoples minds having had a continuous brilliant German, in house development, was in deep kaka in 1972, with their antiquated and increasingly unmarketable 170mm pariah stance. Given the fact that American Optical had been producing infinity systems, already since 1962 and had by 1972 brought that to Reichert, E.Leitz's luddite stance in the early 70's seems almost unbelievable. Wild-Heerbrugg took over control of the company in two major share purchases , beginning in 1972 and integrated the Wild 160mm systems into the overhaul of Leitz microscope models. The Diaplan and Aristoplan , were the evidence of this renewal but those in many ways were Wild microscopes.

I have four Wild M20s and all of their fine focus are working, although one is a bit stiff. The Nikon S's problem is from a plastic gear which tends to break. I have not disassembled the Wild focus mechanism, so don't know if they use a plastic gear or not, but can't rule that out because they do have problems with one of their mechanical stages, which has a plastic gear which can get stripped easily. I haven't heard of any systemic problems with the Wild fine focus.

Mostly in a spare room, some in the attic, some in the garage and some scattered here and there in the house and some I sell. I consider it my other 401K!

I just got three more scopes (AO 10 Phasestar, AO trinocular Cycloptic and the Leitz-Wild SM Frankenscope) and another on the way (Zeiss Junior with some DIC components)...I need a bigger house! :D
