Microbe Hunter #2

#1 Post by Charles » Mon Feb 29, 2016 1:30 pm

A 'new' Steindorff Microbe Hunter coming from Canada has found a new home in the US... 8-)
Looks like it has had a rough life, but, we'll see if we can bring it back to life.

Very cool! Thank you for sharing, Charles.

Is that a Leitz?

I like that 6 slot nosepiece. Any special objective there?

Does the condenser has a filter tray somewhere? It seems to have limited space under condenser?

Is there a mirror placed at 45 degree to direct light up?

That is an amazing looking microscope.
Thought that unique shape was familiar, also the #2 was a bit of a clue!

I think Oliver needs to own one.

Congratulations on another great scope.

Can't wait to see how it looks after a "Charles" treatment.

Awaiting the report, and don't spare the pictures.

Thanks Fan,

It is a Steindorff made in Berlin Germany. Here is an article at Micscapes:
http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/art ... dorff.html

The objective I have been looking for and didn't have for this scope is the 60X. I also didn't have this three turret condenser which rotates on a turret like the objectives do and the light shines straight up and doesn't use prisms or mirrors. I don't know if there is anything to hold filters in the condenser but the top of the light has an area to accept filters. This also has the light which I don't have on my other Steindorffs.

Thank you Glen,

I plan on cleaning this up and then combining the best with my other Microbe Hunter to make one complete scope and then sell one.

Thank you Rod,

My plan is to clean this up and then combine the best of the two Microbe Hunter scopes into one complete one and then probably sell the other off.

Thank you Charles for your comments.

I did not realize that Microbe Hunter is indeed the model name of that microscope and brand is Steindorff. I thought you were joking.

I like its condenser and how stable it is.

It's a perfectly astounding microscope if you ask me -- lots of unusual features for sure, but the turret condenser is what amazes me the most, not to mention makes me drool with envy! I'm not gonna say I perfectly understand how it all works, but I slowly come to regard the condenser's role as the heart of a microscope more and more.

At any rate, extremely cool post, thanks yet again Charles! 8-) 8-) 8-)

(Oh yeah, what Rod said about don't spare the photos...)

Thank you Kurt.

Carl Zeiss Jena also had a rotating condenser turret called an Amplival, as can be seen here:

I am anxious to get this (should be here Wednesday) and get working on it.

Congradulations on your #2 MicrobeHunter, Charles. I always speculated that it's name was inspired by the popular book: "The MicrobeHuntyers"...err..perhaps Oliver named this forumen magazine due same book as the inspiration?

I have that small manual, and (I guess) my stand is a: Stein-Dorf Berlin T.Y,N. circa 1960's.

Im have this firms 'pumpkin lamphouse in it's case..PM me if you need it for cost of mailing it to you . I also have an extra: Stein-Dorf Berlin power transformer..PM me if any intrest,Charles. thanks for you display of unique stand! Charlie guevara

Thank you Charlie G,

I do think the microscope was named after the book. The book came out almost 20 years before the microscope was named.

I've sent you a pm for the light and transformer. I would be interested if they can be used on any of my five various Steindorffs.

The scope arrived yesterday and a cursory look over found everything moves, rotates correctly. Nothing broken or bent. All glass intact and the light works and even the objectives and eyepieces are in good condition. The bad is that it is very dirty and it looks like it was repainted at one time and the paint is cracking and peeling. I will break it down and clean it up first and then determine if I want to strip the paint down and repaint it or leave it as it is. I normally don't repaint but this one which may need it.

A wonderful, very interesting addition to your superb collection! Does anyone know what was the purpose of the (super-sturdy looking) double arm design?

Cleaned up the Steindorff Microbe Hunter. I still haven't decided what to do about the paint. It is cracked and peeling and should be repainted but...I like leaving scopes the way I find them...but a paint job would make this thing look really nice. I was going to take both of my Steindorffs and put the best pieces on the best scope and sell the other one but...I have problems letting go. The two are built differently, one has a mirror and one has light which is held in place on the base (which the other doesn't have), the stages are different and the objective turret is different as is the condenser. So, I'm going to keep both. :|

(Hi All; still a newbie on this Forum.)

Very cool. I too have a Steindorff Microbe Hunter, but I did not realize that they could have a triple condenser. Mine has a single condenser.

However, I also have a Zeiss Jena Nf with a triple condenser where one turret is a pancratic.

Have you tried yours out? How do you find it?

Best -- Miche

Indeed we all hope your MicrobeHunter 'cult instrument' refurbish plan is still in play...err..even if on a 'back burner' as with so many chores we all plan to complete! Thank you, Charles, for this (one of many forum post instances)...hank you, Charles for this thread which indicates...past threads which are: 'bumped to recent posting'...often are wonderful eye-candy, and informative sharing of terrific microscopy equipment/ microscopy paths.
