A new centerpiece for the brass section

#1 Post by Radazz » Wed Oct 03, 2018 6:39 pm

Here’s an 1880s Bosch & Lomb ‘Investigator’
This one was at such a low price point, my first thought was that no one would let go of one for this price unless it is completely worn out or broken or delaminated. Or the seller doesn’t know what it is.
Reading further revieled that “This was my grandfather’s and I don’t know anything about them etc.
Then he said the gold paint on the base was chipped???
I decided to gamble and was delighted to receive a working specimen!
The lacquer looked like it had been rode hard and put away wet. Freckles and pits. So, sadly, the lacquer had to come off. Surprisingly, the pillar and limb/focus block seem to be copper.
Cleaned up nicely, and I am happy, and lucky to find one within my means.
This one has no serial number that I can find, and the later model had scallops on the toes of the base, so I believe this is an early model.

Enjoy

Beautiful scope, what a great find. If you you're patient you can find some great deals like this on that auction site. It's often someone that doesn't know what they are selling and didn't take the time to research it. Sometimes they will misspell the name, I have found some great deals that way, Lietz, Rollieflex...

Very nice. Time to start looking for some woodwinds.

Hi Radazz,

thank you for showing this nice addition to your collection!
In 1880 the normal household had no item that needed control over dimensions of smaller than 1mm. This started with sewing machines and bicycles. So these old microscopes show what was possible over what was usual at the time.

Let's try and find an Oboe... that way we can start fine tuning!!! And just a reminder, A=440 doesn't have anything to do with angstroms, fortunately, probably no electron microscopists lurking around here! :D
