Leeuwenhoek Microscope Copies
Leeuwenhoek Microscope Copies
Here is a couple of Leeuwenhoek replica microsopes. I can actually see things with both but the brass one gives the best images.
Re: Leeuwenhoek Microscope Copies
Beautiful replicas. Thank you for posting those pictures.

Thanks for this. Interesting. Here is a couple of Leeuwenhoek replica microsopes. I can actually see things with both but the brass one gives the best images.
Looked up how they work and came across a site that tells you how to make one.

Charles, you really are a collector! How old the replicas?
Re: Leeuwenhoek Microscope Copies
Jim,
The one in the black was made in 1970. The brass one, I don't know the date. It does have imprinted Replica Leiden on the back, which leads me to believe it was made in the Netherlands.

Quite the collection. You should open a museum.

I read somewhere that Leeuwenhoek made his lenses by fashioning glass droplets, which he became quite proficient at, rather than a grinding method. This allowed him to achieve very high magnifications. Can you tell how these were made?
Re: Leeuwenhoek Microscope Copies
Hi Apo,
I can't tell if these were made by grinding or from glass droplets.

I certainly wouldn't know either but presumably these would be off the shelf plano-convex lenses. I think he managed to figure out a way of cooling a glass drop on an exceptionally smooth non-adherent surface( possibly a polished gemstone or the like?). This allowed him to get into the triple figures and see some very small "animacules".

Thanks for the interesting discussion.

These look more like door hinges. We've come a long way!
