Left to right:
Zeiss Standard 14 Phase Contrast
Zeiss inverted Phase Contrast
I’ve seen the name Opton associated with this stand, but I thought that was for the camera lenses.
Zeiss Standard GBL
Zeiss Standard Junior

Enjoy,

Thanks, MichaelG!
IMHO this style with the balls and simple curves are the most beautiful.

Impressive and nice.
I have seen the very wide stage on the Standard 16 (or 18?) on the left in a Zeiss Brochure from that era. Is it advantageous in use ?

Hi Radazz,
nice collection!
Is your big stage really flat and in good condition?
I have one similar to this and it is deeply washed out and in additon of concave shape. :shock:

I read that the idea behind the design based on geometric forms was to make it easier to machine the moulds and after the casting machine the casted parts. No idea whether this was true but it would make sense. And good workers were in short supply at this time.
These are Zeiss West microscopes. In 1945 the american troops reached Jena before the russians, to whose occupying territory it would become. They deported the leading management and scientists to continue the company Zeiss in the western zone but had to leave the master machinists and workers. I'm quite sure that for an insider it would be possible to point out product details that are the result of this division of work force. In my view Zeiss West was more innovative for the next decades, but Zeiss Jena microscopes seemed to be made with a bit more heart.

I’ve only seen pictures and they were of a standard 16 with the rheostat on the base.
The riser may be for a larger illuminator on a 14.
Just guessing.

Bob

I got this one from St. Louis university medical school, and aside from some scratches it is just about perfect. I also have the shutter and 35 mm camera gear.
I don’t have an original illuminator, but the led version from RetroDiode works great.

Very nice! The black Zeiss are quite special.

I heard (don't remember where) that it had something to do with the extra large slides used by vets to count parasites.

@75RR,
I actually meant the shape of the GFL, Junior, Phomi and WL stands.
The big stage will for sure be useful in some cases, the slide holder can be exchanged for something bigger.

@Radazz,
nice to hear that your stage is in fine condition. My first one was in an absolutely bad condition so that I suspected this stage to wear worse than other stages.
Some older Zeiss stages are made from a hard plastic material, this on is cast aluminium with a black coating.
