Issues with a normal LED bulb
Issues with a normal LED bulb
My LOMO biolam is equiped with a light with a normal bulb. This is giving quite a yellow light, so I use a blue filter to get a white background. Yesterday I have tried to replace the LOMO standard bulb with a small LED bulb of 1.5W, normally used as light for the fridge. The bulb is made by OSRAM, a LED star special T26 (cool white), see picture below
However, when taking pictures or video with the smartphone, there are dark horizontal stripes in the background. The frequency of the bulb must be interfering with the smartphone. (See picture below).
Does anybody knows if this will be the case for all standard available small bulbs? If this is the case, I have to think of another type of LED replacement (like a 12V home-made system with a PWM-dimmable power LED.
Just optically this is quite an improvement compared with the standard bulb. The background is very nicely white (no need for a blue filter anymore) and the light intensity is also higher. However, when taking pictures or video with the smartphone, there are dark horizontal stripes in the background. The frequency of the bulb must be interfering with the smartphone. (See picture below).

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
Hi Chipper,
I have used a combination of 12V power supply and PWM controller for several microscope lighting projects.. This combo works well for me..

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
Those "stripes" are common with many commercial LEDs. Not all do that though. Sorry, I don't know for sure what works best for you. Maybe try BillT's recommendation, if you are capable of DIY.
Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
The beauty of LED systems is they are so inexpensive, a person can afford to experiment with many configurations to find the one that is right for them for very little cash outlay..

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
Thanks all for the advice. I probably will make a DIY system with dimmable option. After one day I am realy hooked on LEDs. My wet mounts seem to last forever..

That is one of the benefits of LED.. Very low heat..

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
I put together this LED light for cheap, I had all the other stuff laying around. You can raise and lower the light and change angles. The container for the bulb is one of those little battery hair trimmers. I removed all the stuff that was inside of it and used a wall plug DC power adapter with resistor.

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
A while back I posted "AMScope M200B-MS conversion 20 watt lamp to LED" It is just below your post.
I had posted a PDF file for down load of the schematic of my latest setup wiring and parts list.
It might help give you ideas how to modify your setup.

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
Hi chipper - I converted my 6V 20W Halogen to LED a while back also. Here's the post I made, with video. It's a really cheap, easy and effective solution, still using it happily today!
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2619&hilit=LED+conversion
These 2 LEDs did the trick, eventually I preferred the more powerful (5W but 360deg) cylindrical gel-encased bulbs.
This is the first type I tried, which is obviously flat, and works perfectly - in fact I fitted on of these into my stereo 'scope at the same time - still working perfectly to this day..
and in my stereo 'scope,
Then I fitted this slightly brighter & whiter bulb into the same G4 holder, still using this in my compound 'scope.
Here's the dimmer fitted (double-sided sticky sponge) to the side of my 'scope - tidy & convenient.
The post linked to above has all the details, just a dimmer, a 12V power supply and a bulb - dirt-cheap to fit too!

Re: Issues with a normal LED bulb
Thanks for all the info! I will try to order a powersupply and dimmer from the internet. Now I only need some free time for the DIY project...
