Interesting, and very useful. Did you build or buy the power supply? What about the LED housing? Do you have links for the LEDs and the power supply (if bought)? Thank you for posting this!
Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Hi Gekko,
Here is a link to one of them that I have:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121136774336?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
It comes with a heat sink and the driver.. It also has a large flange for ceiling mount that I removed to make it smaller on the diameter... All I had to do was attach a cord to plug it in the wall...

Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Thank you: I just ordered one. I"m amazed at that price with free shipping. It looks like an excellent way of illumination for microscopes equipped with a mirror. A couple of polarizers on top of it will allow dimming it. And who would've thought to use a ceiling light for a microscope?
Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Nicely done! I love this kind of DIY hack
Lots of very good options for using off the shelf led products for microscopy.
I did something similar when I wanted a battery powered light source for my Spencer 33. Also an eBay product, less than $5 shipped. I added a difusser cut from a milk jug and a rubber band, and it works perfectly.
Thanks for sharing your idea

I like your portable set up!... I have seen these lighting assemblies at Harbor Freight... Time to get one...Also, you recycled filter material is great!.... Thanks for sharing...
Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
I forgot to add, that is a fine looking old Spencer you have there...

She's a good machine indeed.

Do you think this could be installed in place of the sub stage mirror on a stereoscope ?

I don't see why not, if you have enough room.... It is very lightweight......
Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Not sure what you mean by "installed"?
The easiest approach would be to simply remove the mirror, and place this unit between the scope's feet pointing up. That was how the original simple electric illuminators worked.
It should work just fine, but you may need to experiment with diffusers a bit. If the space between the diffuser and the light needs to be shortened to make it fit it may require a material that creates a greater diffusion effect to prevent the image of the individual LEDs from transmitting through. Just experiment with household stuff like paper, plastics, etc. You should be able to find something that will work.

I sent for a light, then I bid on an AO Nichkolas illuminator, and bought a ring light.
Under exposure should not be a problem, frying maybe!

Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Sorry, by "installed" I meant removing the mirror.. I should have been more clear... I have used diffusers cut from plastic orange juice cartons.. You can stack as many as you need on top of it... a polarizer filter lays easily on top for crossed polar work...
Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Is the lamp the same diameter as the mirror? That would be too easy!

Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
With the large flange removed the two that I have here measure 2 1/8" diameter....
Re: 3W LED That Works Well For Me..
Thanks. I got the same one you did, figuring fewer bulbs would give a smaller diameter. Looks like a little
fabricating will be in order.

Does anyone know if a dimmer can be used for this lamp ?

Yes. Around $8. I did not save the link when I looked them up as I'm going to see how well
the light works. Check the reviews, the dimensions, and all the specs. I do remember one had a
metal case. My light is still weeks away so I wont be much help for awhile. Dissipating the heat
seemed to be a problem.
