Unidentified structures in lichen. A diatom?

#1 Post by nastur74 » Tue Apr 30, 2024 5:16 pm

Hello
I rencently observed a lichen sample from an oak tree. I could see the hyphae and the single-celled algae. Among the debries I found some structures I could not identify. Anyone can help me? Are they diatoms? They are the brown structures.
Thank you

The first one is the spore of an ascomycete fungus. The second one might be fungal as well, though I don't recognize it (not a diatom, in any case).

The second one is a size 5 , women's , Lilliputian clog shoeprint.

Just kidding. That's a wild yeast..... maybe schizosaccharomyces or commonly called a fission yeast. Fission yeasts longitudinally divide like bacteria. The line separating the heel from the sole of the shoeprint is the division between the parent and daughter cell.

Hi, nastur 74...thanks for this post. I ask you: 1) how did you collect the lichen sample from oak tree? Did you shave off a segment of the lichen down to the bark of the tree it flourished on?

It sounds odd..but when collect a specimen of lichen...it is similar to a biopsy collection of skin lesion a doctor employs.

What is your approach to lichen specimen collection...do you collect an entire lichen segment ( like a doctor might biopsy a lesion on a persons skin)?

Hello and thank you all for answering.
My 7-year-old daughter pinched the sample with her own fingers to later make a video for our microscopy channel. She loves to look through the eyepieces and have her family and friends listen to her on YouTube. I know that in the sample I have to look for hyphae and unicellular algae,...but I was surprised to see those structures.
