Are these Campanella Umbellaria ?

#1 Post by D0c » Fri Jan 08, 2021 3:54 pm

I'm pretty certain I know what these are but would like confirmation before i post to my Flickr site.

Originally i thought pseudovorticella as I've seen these before but on second thoughts I don't think they are. The stalks do not contract, the body does so I'm edging towards Campanella Umbellaria.

Hope I'm right.

You are right. :D In addition to the non-contractile stalk, we see dark cytoplasm and a very thick peristomial lip (caused by multiple windings of peristomial cilia, which are also visible here as dark lines on the lip).

A very minor note: the second part of the binomial should be in lower case. So, it's "Campanella umbellaria", not "Campanella Umbellaria". In older texts it's common to see both parts of the binomial in caps, but the standard has changed.

So pleased I got that right.

And thanks for the binomial tip Bruce I'll make sure I write it correct.
