The Heliozoan Connection

#1 Post by Bschnitzer » Wed Sep 20, 2023 7:41 pm

These two appear to be connected by a long stalk. I say "appear" because I'm not sure if the stalk is a specialized axopodium or just some flotsam that both are attached to. Any ideas what's going on here?

This is Clathrulina elegans. Biflagellate swarmer cells sometimes attach to mature organisms to form daisy-chain colonies, as in this rather cool image by Martin Kreutz: https://realmicrolife.com/wp-content/up ... Kreutz.jpg

Thanks once again, Bruce! I agree that Mr. Kreutz’s image is not only cool, but elegant🙂 as well.
